I dunno. I tend to look at other shooter's rigs, see something that I think looks good, then try to figure out how I can make one.
I also started out with a ball-handled starter. Found out, when I decided to mount it on my bag strap(one less thing taking up space in the bag) that the ball wouldn't let it fit right. One guy at a shoot had his strap-carried starter made of a forked piece of antler; long starter, short one, and a powder measure!
Figured I didn't need the measure(already have one made) and went looking through my antler pieces for a relatively flat one. Busted the wooden ball with a chisel and mallet, saving the rods; Cut off a piece of antler the right length, drilled one hole in the middle of it, and another in the end, making sure that the end hole wasn't too deep for the brass nub. Did some filing and sanding to clean up the rough edges, and epoxied the rods into their respective holes.
The starter now rests nice and comfortable on my bag strap, easy to get to and replace after use.
If you're not very creative and imaginative, look at what the other guys use.
