What are thin shot cards made from? Have a Bess and have been thinking of using triple ought buck for deer and moose in the 75 caliber smooth bore.

I have seen and used them made out of playing cards.

If using buckshot, I suggest you get close to them, about 20 yards. I have heard, and read on here, that buckshot is not very effective at longer ranges. No personal experience with it.

Sometimes we overlook the obvious....
One day I tore apart the plastic covers of a 3 ring binder and discovered they were made of the most beautiful hard thick cardboard for making over power wads.

Now I have a whole drawer full of them.

Where are you hunting that you can use buckshot for moose? And why? I would think you would have to be within about 40 feet or so for it to be effective for a relatively quick, clean kill.

I have used cereal boxes, the back of tablets, and commercial cards. I like the back of tablet cards over the shot. The commercial works well too.

Cards? V.M. Starr....the grandpa of the ML shotgun wrote this:
use only one kind of wads and those I cut from cardboard like display signs that are extra thick, about 3/32 is about right and use two of these on the powder and one on the shot. I have had several pretty wise gun men tell me that that is not enough wads before they saw the results but never have had one say a word further on the subject after they had seen one of my guns perform so loaded.
i have copied this in my 16 gauge fowler and found it to be so.

Sorry I'm coming a bit late to the party, but I haven't been to the Forum in a while.

A term I've seen used for thickness of in the industry is the "point", which is a 1/1000th of an inch thickness. The best material I've found to make cards out of is often used in very stiff dividers and file folders, and it is usually called "25-point pressboard", as in .025" nominal thickenss, although it may mike a thou or two thicker. As with others, I have also used cereal, cracker, etc. boxes (around the same thickness but not as stiff), shotshell boxes (maybe a bit stiffer than cereal boxes), milk cartons (quite stiff but thinner). Commercial cards are nominally .030". For use over power in the somewhat rough bores of my 16ga, I need to use three or four of the normal-thickenss cards, or one or two more of the milk carton ones. I've never used the milk-carton ones over shot, but I've never needed more than one regular-thickness card over shot or ball. I make sure they are at least .020" larger than the bore (accumulated a few punches), and I have done the multiple-shots-from-one-barrel test a few times to see if the load in the second barrel moved, nor have any shifted from handling (yet?).

Regards,
Joel

I make my own from poster board . They measure about .050 . Two over powder and one over shot. Works great
