Shot cup for 20 ga. 1 1/2 .oz load

Honestly I don't understand why hunters always want to take turkeys past 30 yards. If you get them inside 30 yards, preferably 25, most any load will put them on the ground. If you can't get them in close, then you need to work more on your calling than your loads.

An old half down fence caused a double beard to hang up. No way to move in so no turkey dinner. I guess if you only hunt perfect set ups you could set your limit at 20 yards and use a .410.

Doesn't seem to be suggesting one needs a perfect set up..., sounded like he was suggesting one use the old tech at its limits, instead of trying to duplicate a modern, choked 20 gauge with a 3" magnum shotshell. After all, one will be more efficient with a modern breech loader, and modern cammo, especially in the rain, than would one be using a flinter and repro colonial clothing. N'est-ce Pas?

Yes "wax loads" are an old-school method of holding shot in a tighter pattern, and since we're using old school tech, it works well in some guns, though beeswax might be a better option, less brittle.

Plastic shot cups work, but they kind of defy tradition, if that matters to you. If you put a wad beneath it, you shouldn't have a problem with plastic fouling.

Trying to build a load for turkey season for the NW Trade Gun I have in 20ga. I ran across these and wondered if anyone has ever used them.

There's a pinned post about how to make paper shot cups. I looked into trying this with my gun but problem is finding a shotcup that fits your barrel and isn't too big/small.

Here's an example of my homemade shot cup for my 20 ga. NW trade gun . I just wrap paper round a dowel , twist and tuck the bottom of it , hornets nest was or grass on top., works great for better , tighter patterns . Back in the dark ages I'd use the modern plastic wads , pick em up by the dozens at shootin range for free , still got dozens of them under the bench but I.like my homemade ones now . . I'd wrap a piece of masking tape around it before pushing her down the tube ,grass or nest on top ...tight groups ! Either way knocks em dead !! Use grass , corn meal or hornets nest ( broken up ) on top or it'll slug . Try a few shoots in practice first .... Best of luck ...

I love this method! This is simple, cheap and most effective. I have a 50 cal traditions BP pistol with riffling. This should do the trick. I will let you know how the patterning looks. Many thanks for picture too. Best!!!
