Guys I know the .69 cal muskets used during the war had buck and ball as well as straight buckshot cartridges available.

I also understand that double barrel shotguns were used and liked by Confederate cavalry during the war. My question is, did they happen to use paper cartridges with said shotguns? I can imagine a pouch full of them would be MUCH easier to load on horseback vs a flask and loose shot.

Thoughts?

Absolutely, as buck an ball cartridges would've been around, but they may have made their own which could've been all buckshot (hell could've been creek pebbles for all we know)..., as they'd be kinda loose in a .72 barrel. Bouncing around on horseback, you wouldn't want them to shift forward, especially in a thin walled shotgun barrel.
