For all you over the log shooters I have a couple questions regarding sight shaders. What material do you use to fabricate shaders? What methods do you use to fit and attatch them? How would you attatch the front sight shader on a half stock rifle?
Your input would be very much appreciated.

Hey Doc. I use shaders made from sheet copper. I usually cut the copper sheeting into 3 1/2 inch by 6 inch pieces.I bend the sheets into a "u" shape, then carefully roll over and flatten the sharp edges where it clips onto the barrel. The "u" shape of the shader is squeezed enough to act like a clip on the barrel flats. They hold tight enough to stay in place when shooting, but normally the front one is removed to facilitate loading. Been using the same pair for the last 30 years...when switching to a different sized barrel I just squeeze to fit whatever size barrel I am wanting to use. Sheet copper can be picked up from most any muzzleloader supplier. This style is period correct also if that is a factor.

I like TwoShadows method, he's cover in all circles of correctness... I myself do not have to worry about that factor as yet, but I will take TwoShadows working idea and make some shaders out of copper... What I use now is 1 1/2 inch PVC, 8 inches long and spray painted flat black. I cut a 3/4 inch slot longways with a hack saw, flex it over the barrel until it rest on the stock, then I strap it on with a 3/4 inch wide piece of material that has velcro sewn to it at the ends... My front sight is a blade with a copper globe over it that I make myself... I use 1/2 inch copper and silver solder it over the blade... This works for me and as said before, period correct is not a factor at this time... When it does become a factor, the copper shaders I am going to make will come out... :)

In the "K.I.S.S." world, we use 35mm film canisters. Cut the bottom off, slice the side, trim to fit either sides of barrel flats or to sight base.
The plastic has enough spring action to work fine at the bench.
