Question for anyone who has a Lyman Great Plains Rifle. Which sights do you prefer to use or have on your gun. I installed the adjustable rear sight on mine when I put the kit together but lately have been thinking about trying out the rear fixed sight that was included in the kit.

I have the GPR in 54 cal and it is a blast to shoot. Didn't get a deer with it last year, but I hope to this fall.

I have the adjustable site on mine. I sighted it in at my hunting load with the site cranked all the way down. That way I can have some elevation adjustment (if I need it). I haven't yet, but I like knowing I have the flexibility.

GPR Percusion .54 Cal.--love it!!

I didn't like the adjustable sight. There was too much slop in it and it never stayed zeroed. I put the primitive sight on and it is much better. I get a better sight picture with it too. File down the front sight to get your POA zeroed and then you don't have to mess with it any more.

I tricked mine. The notch in the screw (when the site is adjusted all the way down) was too shallow to my liking. Actually, all of them were. So, I did a little bit 'o filling and- no creep. It hasn't moved on me in three years.

I admitt, I haven't tried the fixed yet, but I still may.

I changed my GPR to fixed sights as well. I too, thought the orginal had too much slop in it. Besides, once the fixed site is set, it is set.

I purchased and installed the Lyman "hunting sights" on mine. The front post has a white bead that shows up well in the woods and the rear sight is adjustable for elevation; two screws hold the adjustable sliding piece in place. Lyman percussion GPR is one nice rifle. Sturdy, pleasing to look at, handles well, and accurate!

You can ask ten different people which sights are best, and get ten very different answers. When all is said and done the final authority will be your own eyes. Which type of sight lines up better for you.
The majority of consensus here appears to be with the fixed style, and I too will have to add my vote with them.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think I will try the fixed rear sight to see how it goes. I had purchased the extra Lyman sights like you described but they seem a little to "modern" for the gun - looks wise that is.

The white bead on the front would be a nice feature for the darker early morning and late evening hours in the woods in order to see the front sight. I had thought about putting a dab of "white out" on the regular front sight for deer season and just scraping it off afterward.

I prefer the adjustable. The different style of buckhorn seems to line up easier for me than the fixed one does.

I put the primitive sight on when I finished my kit. Never tried that adjustble, but love the fixed sight. I think a better sight picture for me. Shoots straight...just need to file the front down to bring 'er up a bit. Shooting 100 gr. 2f, .530 RB and .18 PT with Moose Milk. After only having owned T/C ML, I really like the Lyman GPR .54 perc.

I have a small bottle of pearl-white nail polish in my shooting box (that my daughter hasn't noticed missing :shocked2: :winking: ). It shows up quite well.

I just installed the fixed rear sight this past afternoon, I like the looks of it. Seems easier to line up and focus with the front sight. I'm going to be headed to camp sometime after the 4th and will be testing it out.

Rusty: How much did you have to file your front sight down? What was the best way to do it?

take it slow with the file swampbuck. keep it square with the sight and remove very small amounts of metal between test shooting. its easy to remove metal and harder to put it back.

Go slow. File, shoot. File, shoot.
Like said before, keep the file level.

Good luck.

Fixed for me. The adjustable was too hard for me to see. The fixed sight I can see clearly. Must be my eyes. Go figure.

I went to the shooting range last week to test out the rifle after switching sights. I found it was much easier using the fixed rear sight as opposed to the adjustable.

I loaded up with 90 grains of FFg, .530" RB and 0.015" patch w/BB. I had a file "at the ready" to make sight adjustments as needed once I found where my groups were going. To my surprise, I was dead on at 30 & 50 yards - without making any changes in the sights.

I had a similar problem with the adjustable rear sight on my GPR. I found that the notch wasn't machined cleanly and there were metal burrs inside the notch, and the notch itself wasn't cut square.

A little careful filing with a knife-edge file cleaned it up nicely.

I attached the adjustable sight while I was working up a load. Like many of you I found it wobbly. Despite that I managed to get the groups I was looking for.

While I considered switching to the fixed sight for reasons mentioned here, I opted to epoxy the adjustable sight to prevent movement. I guess you could say my adjustable sight is now a fixed sight. It kills deer though.

I added a dab of orange model aeroplane paint to the foresight to make it more visible. Works great!

As for the GPR? I love it.

Cheers!
