Did any of the original old rifles have peep sights and globe front sights? Eyes are getting old, having trouble with standard type sights. Wearing tri focus glasses is a pain and not much help. I have tang peep sights and globe front sights on Sharps, Rolling Block, Trapdoor, High Wall and lever black powder cartridge rifles and they are great.

Well, the debate has been raging a while on 18th century guns, but definitely by the 2nd 3rd of the 19th century, lollipop tang sights were known. They were just a finely-threaded bolt screwed into the tang, with the top flattened into a disk and an apeture drilled in it.

Generally, windage seems to have been regulated with the front sight, although there were fully adjustable tang sights also. Target shooters tried EVERYTHING they thought would give them and edge.

Since you are from California, you might want to look into Lawrence P. Shelton's book California Gunsmiths. There are many examples of peep sights and many rifles built in the Sacramento area.

I have couple TC peeps on rifles and several Lyman 57 peeps on others. I like peeps and have no problems with them in the woods either. I always use a peep on my bow as well!

I have found that adding a "third" peep sight to the rifle gives a "pin hole lens" effect to help the eyes focus on the origional sights and since it is just a focusing aid its location does not have to be exact . If you desire more information and a picture give me a p.t. with your email . I have trouble with photo bucket. :idunno:
