Have a tip curtis dubbs fowler pre carve stock. Of Course it has the siler inlet, he dont have them not inlet. Someone on here sent me some pictures of a siler that had been reworked to look more english, that is what i am wanting to do to this lock. I know i can round the pan somewhat but what else could be done? Might be able to round the tail some since this is a l&r lock and are made a tad bigger.

Well, if the stock is inlet for a Siler lock, you're not going to be able to reshape the lock plate.

And I'm not sure what you want when you say you want the lock to "look more English"... If you're wanting to make this into a big 1750's English round faced lock, it simply ain't gonna happen.

Whoa fella's,
It does not have to have a rounded plate to be English. In fact, after about 1755-1760, rounded plates were generally only mounted on military and cheaper grades of guns. They fell out of fashion during the 1750s. Of course there are always exceptions such as a fine Twigg duck gun from the 1770s with a rounded plate but the trend was flat plates. Unfortunately, by the 1760s almost all English locks had pan bridles except the cheapest trade locks. In addition, that frizzen spring is an abortion that needs to be reshaped. Bowkill, it is going to take me some time to root through my library but I'll see if I can think of some ideas. Can you weld?

I would round out the pan and make it look like it is made on the plate instead of being bolted on. From an appearance point of view, I think this is one of the major differences. Of course, I am no expert. Many English locks have a similar plate shape, so the pointed tail should not be too much of a problem.

If you are already starting with a lock that does not fit the inlet...... why not get an L&R Queen Anne or some other English-y lock?

Maybe a TOW catalogue and do some measuring/figuring.

If it was me I would call Jim Chambers and have him put a deluxe large siler in the mail. Parts availability, warranty, etc is looking like it will continue at the same high standard for at least one more generation.

I have cut a catalog all to pieces. The problem is they cut the side panels on the gun so close to the lock it almost has to be the same length. I am just going to change the looks of the super, be a whole different king of lock.. Just going on a Turkey killing machine anyway....lol
