What do you all think about Sitting Fox Kits?
Again I am looking at Fusils and the longest Barrel they offer is only a 42"
The prices look great

i think that his web sight is great but there are much better kits available for the money..i orderedmy first kit from him and it came directlty from randys muzzloader shop ...u can just go directly to his source and save $$$.

Duetsch,

Get ahold of Greg Christian out of Miss.. he will make you one for a lot less than a kit. I havent found a single negative comment on his work.

If you want to do build a French gun using a components set, go with RE Davis. They are putting the best one out there right now. Good folks to deal with as well.

(longest Barrel they offer is only a 42")
This is one of my single biggest problems with most kits avaliable. The companies in question will advertise these guns as to the most historically correct, ect. but when you look at original gun barrel lenghts most in the mid 18th cen. are 44" or longer. My type "G" has a 46" barrel but it is a Jack Brooks kit with a Getz barrel. The R.E Davis kit has a 48" which is very appropriate for the gun...just a bit heavy. But when you look at Caywood, Northstar, ect. 42 is the norm. I understand that is is a question of having the appropriate machine avaliable to propduce longer lenghts but I think it is a farce to produce a product and advertise it as "the real deal" when dimensional charateristics are not up held. I have owned a Caywood gun & A Northstar "early english" trade gun. I sold those guns to trade up to the current guns I have now. There is a Gentleman named Micheal Sidelman(sp?) who is building some fine type"G" trade guns. Infact one of his guns were mistaken for a Jack Brooks gun at a gun smithing school held a few weeks ago. If your intrested I could PM you his number and you could get him to send you pictures of his work. These are light weight guns built to origial specs(a 20 bore gun with a 46" barrel that weighs 6 pounds or a little less)

If your intrested you can contact me @ [email protected] :v

Have a great day,
David

You can get a pretty good Fusil de Chase Cows foot fusil from the TOW 44" Tulle this barrel length would be proper for many of the contracts of the early 18th century, the lock needs some work and will still be short but all others will be the same unlesscustom built or modified the .66 bore should bring in a gun at about 7 lb the .62/.58 barrels are the same profile and heavier I have a .58 that is just under 8lb and not realy uncomfortable but 7 is better, walnut stocks are available which is the way to go, iron furnishings and no browning and forget the "plans" and use Bouchards book as a guideling, this is by no means a "replica" but will be the closest you can get in parts from a pre made up set or a finished gun from any of the "semi-custom- folks, one of the Davis guns is 8 3/4 lbs from what I heard pretty heavy I would think, Sitting Fox and others have some really way out writeups about some of the gun types and it concernse me what I am going to get into dealing with someone that does not know enough about the gun to do a correct description/writeup on it particularly if I cannot see all the parts being used, even a reputable single shop man had a writeup about how Walnut and Maples were the common woods used to build French guns in the 18th century, a lot of folks want your money and have no problem peeing down your leg and telling you it's raining,If you want a gun built contact Alex E. here on the forum he has the French guns well dialed in.Good luck

no randy is not tvm ,that is matt advance.randys muzzloading shop number is 662 286 5014.randys tulle kit in brass is 535.00randy heil is his name..he has a poor boy fowler kit for 495.00.this is where sitting fox sends his kitsfrom..he is just a go between.randys tennessee poor boy kit is 456.00 his prices and his service are wonderful..when you call tell him john from delaware said hi..

Well then it will be good, anyone taking over for Jack is a good guy , Jacks always been good to me, I built 30 + guns from him his parts and services are next to none.

sorry bro!!something to be said for my 3rd grade nun telling me to fully read the question ...not half and let your mind do the rest...

"who is alex E,"
Alex Efremco I beopieve is the correct spelling he is a member here and may respond if he sees this post I do not know how much outside work he takes on but any wait will be worthwhile, just the parts for a good French Fusil could run over $700 and the final price over double that for a authentic type gun, Alex did have one for sale on another forum, he may advise if it is still available, it is a matter of choice to the buyer whether he wants a squinter or a close replica of an original and the latter will hold or increase value as there are always folks looking for authentic guns and few available, particularly the French gns of the early/mid 18th century, good luck with your quest and trust to your own research or that from some of the French gun buffs on the forum, the "semi-custom" vendors often twist history a bit to provide the answeres that a customer wants to hear, this is likley what is behind the incorrect writeups on many guns on their sites

I have started my new gun
Deutschers Big Bore
I am not happy with the kits out there that you can get, and the good ones are a 6 mth wait.
If it takes me a year ....I will be able to say
I built it.No one else will have anything like it.
All my kit has been put together over time ....a long time .I do NOT want to look like every one else,or that I just spent a couple grand at sutlers row .
