I cann't say about reliable, but from what I have seen of their rifles they sure lokked good at the Eastern! :idunno:

He grew up down the road from me when I lived in michigan his work is top quality, and rivals the quality of other popular builders such as TVM that push guns out at a high rate of speed.

Based on my own personal experience I would suggest that you visually inspect whatever you buy from him BEFORE you pay for it....Ron

As I understand it.....Sitting Fox is the middle man and not a gun builder. If ordering an assembled gun in-the-white or finished he uses a number of different guys to build it. If I'm inaccurate somebody correct me.

In any business, if that's the case, it can be problematic as not all builders are equal. When you call ask if all the guns are shipped through him or directly from the builder. If he's putting his eyes on each piece before it goes to his customers that's a good thing. If not then I would want to know who's building it and if he stands behind it.

Good luck and Enjoy the journey, J.D.

you are correct sir...i was going to purchase a rifle from him. However when i Learned that he has peple build them and he resells them...i was very leery. Also i got a few posts from diff people that had said that it really depends on who builds the rifle...i heard both good and bad thnings about him. I however opted out and decided to wait...better than rushing and regretting it

First let me sat that I do not have a dog in this fight. However I have been around MLR's and other firearms a long time.

I took the time to look over his web site and they seem kosher to me. They are very up front about who builds the completed rifles that they have for sale. The several that I looked at looked to be high quality and fairly priced for rifles of that quality. If they use top quality
components and high grade wood I would consider having them build me a rifle.

I looked over a couple of darned fine rifles but I have not contacted a custom rifle builder in several years to check the price of barrels , locks and stock blanks. If they are like every thing else I'm guessing they have gone up.

The german silver with the cherry wood stock is a fine looking rifle! Geo. T.

Don't know if that's always the case, but it was in my case. Only at that time I hadn't been on this forum yet and was never advised of that. I thought I was talking to the builder.

You are correct.

In my case it came direct from the builder (and I use the term very loosely in the case of the gun I got)...I called and asked who that guy was!

Excellent advice and what I wish I would have had and known before I ordered. There was no standing behind what was sent to me.

Based on other posts over time in this forum some have had the same experience as I did, some a great experience, so it comes down to the old Clint Eastwood line....Do you feel lucky??? Well...do ya?

I imported a kit to Australia. It was the sthn mtn .40 flintlock. I tried to go through TVM and they stopped answering my emails at the first hurdle. The guy from sitting fox (Keith I think) answered all of my questions and went way out of his way to get the gun to me. The postage of the over-length parcel was the biggest issue but he got around it.

He must've answered dozens of emails. Why? He had nothing to gain. It's not like he was going to get repeat or referred business from me. I ended up getting a beautiful piece of fancy maple and I ended up sending him some extra cash as a tip.

He is deifinitely worth considering in my opinion.

The rifle I'm interested in states that it is a "customer build", I figure it came back to the boss in one way or another, the rifle is new, unfired. Which tells me the gun might have been assembled for the firm. What interests me the most are the multitude of unfinished kits. They seem to be willing to inlet stocks, cut to LOP the butt, barrel set-up, etc. I probably will get a kit for my first build sometime this Summer, I'll go the simple route first.
Again, you guys have been more than helpful, thanks!

I know nothing about Sitting Fox, but when they say "customer build", I think it means a customer bought a kit, built it, and sold it or traded it to them. I was looking through their offerings at a rifle described as a customer build. It was very amateurishly done, leading me to believe someone just bought the kit and put it together, then got rid of it.

Reccomended Sitting Fox to a friend for his 1st. flinter...rifle came back with a Big scratch on the faux damascas barrel, stock dings, triggers hit trigger guard and **** crooked to frizzen. Not sure they didn't send the work out to other builders, but should be shipped to customer in very good shape!

The test for me is their warranty or inspection arrangement. Any company or individual worth salt would cheerfully accept returns. If SF will do that, they're worth the same "risk" as any other. If not, then time for a pass.

Had to go back and look to see if it was still there, it is an Isaac Haines, they call it a common rifle.

I'm just now finishing a kit from Ray at Sitting Fox. He is a nice guy. The kit arrived from another muzzle shop, I forget which right now, I may have saved the box, in another state. Stock inlet was fine to my absolute beginner eyes and the front sight was soldered on competently too. The ramrod entry hole trim was not included in the box and the 8-32 lockscrews turned out to be 10-32. I called Ray about the missing piece and and was supposed to be sent out, but I never got it and I actually forgot all about it as time went on and I slowly chipped away at the project. Turned out I would not have used it anyway as I was after a very plain look. So those were two glitches I had. There was also a long delay in communication at one period as he was in transition from wintering in Fl and heading back north, but that was just a timing thing and not any avoidance on his part. So I'd say you get a decent kit for the lowish end of the price scale that Ray sort of "coordinates" from a few different offsite source in my experience.
