Could someone give the size in thousands of #4, #5, & #6 lead shot please. Thank you kindly. Teton Ted

To get the actual diameter of a shot pellet take the number of the pellet (ie, #6) and subtract from 17. That will be the diameter in thousands. For example, a #4 pellet would be 17-4 = 13 thousands diameter or 0.13 inches in diameter.

Ted:( and others). You can use the " RULE OF 17" to determine the diameter of birdshot. Take the number of the shot, and subtract it from the number 17. That will give you the diameter of the shot, more or less. ( I fudge, becuase the industry seems to have a bit of allowance on sizing shot that you buy.)

#4 shot is .13"

#5 shot is .12"

#6 shot is .11"

#12 shot is .05"

#1 shot is .16"

BB shot is .18" ( NOTE: The steel BBs used in air rifles is only .177" ! Never use BB shot in an air rifle.

BBB shot is .19"

T shot is .20"

F shot is .21"

Buck shot is as follows:

#4 - .24"

#3 - .25"

#2 - .27"

#1 - .30"

#0 - .32"

#00 - .33"

#000 -. 36"

I hope that helps you. The Rule of 17 is a very handly rule to use when buying shot, or shotgun shells. When lead shot could be used on Migratory Waterfowl, Duck hunters like #4 lead shot. Goose Hunters liked #2 lead shot. There was lead BB shot, slightly larger than the air gun ammo, but the BBB, T, and F shots came into being with the introduction of Steel shot. I am not familiar with any source of lead BBB, T, or F shot. # 2 buck- shot has also seemed to died, and there is very little reason for it to be used when compared to #1 or #3 buckshot. The advent of lighter Police Buckshot loads to reduce recoil has lead to a bit of resurgence in the development of buckshot loads in modern shotgun shells.
