Slings

Good morning everyone
I have a really nice caywood English game gun that I’ve been hunting with. It has the swivel and stud from danny for a sling. I would like to get a nice sling for it something traditional that’s made for the swivel and stud setup I have. Does anyone have any suggestions or places where I could find one? I’ve looked at Dixie gun works and track of the wood but I’m not finding anything outside of the universal types. thanks for any suggestions

I have seen some small leather workers at Rendezvous that would make such a sling, but most of them don't have a web presence.

Have been making slings for Pa. flint deer rifles using trimmings from leather hide tanning. I buy them by the bundle from " Leather Unlimited " , and cut sling leather strips 1" to 3/4 " wide from the tanned scrap. The scraps are 1/8" thick to slightly less , and 2 ft. to 5 ft. or slightly longer. The whole bundle probably doesn't cost more than a couple commercial made slings and have the "look " of cool old hand made stuff. Use the scrap bundle leather for powder horn straps , shot pouch straps , and the occasional belt , and Dog collar. All the dogs around here recommend them. The scraps are stiff just as they come off the cutting table and once turned into useful straps , need leather dressing to soften them for ample flexibility. .............oldwood

When I wanted a well made sling for my Caywood gun I contacted the nearby Tandy Leathercraft store, explained my need, and asked for recommendations of a craftsman. They would not give me names, etc., but instead passed my contact info to three regular customer of good reputation.

I met with one leather worker, and we figured out what my needs were. I have some leather working skills, but I wanted a sling as fine as the gun.

The end product is a one and one-eighth inch strap that laces on and adjusts at the front swivel, and attaches to a button on the buttstock. The maker punched enough holes in the upper end that I can adjust for light clothing in dove season, or for heavy pit blind goose hunting clothing. There is a neatly done splice at about one-third of the way up from the button, it does not detract from appearance. Leather is dyed a sort of walnut brown, and oiled for weather resistance.

Custom work is not cheap, but I got what I wanted- a sling that looks right on the gun, like it could have been seen in a 19th century hunting camp.

Thanks guys. I’ll probably contact danny on Monday and see if he has any recommendations. I’ve been hunting all weekend with the smoothbore just amazing how light these things are, just need a sling so I can free up my hands

Here is the sling I made for my Browning Mountain Rifle. I used a hand forged iron buckle. I have a similar setup on my fowler, except with an antique, brass harness buckle.

He makes really nice ones for Jaegers, at least check him out before deciding.

I even made a scratch sling for my US M1841. Just a little sewing, making a buckle, it's crude but functional.
