Anyone shot the foster type slugs thru their smoothbore?
The ball moulds seem to come in 690 and 662 for the 12 guage. I would guess one is for patch use and one is for use bare with wads only. Which is better and why?

I don't, others might.

I use 0.690" balls and 0.018" patches in my 12 bore. Mine is a pure cylinder bore with no choke restrictions at all. A tighter choke might not allow that combination.

The best one is the one that is most accurate in your firelock.

I have a shotgun and it has screw in chokes. You are not supposed to shoot solid bullets out of it. Both Lee and Lyman produce moulds for slugs designed to be loaded in standard wads that should be ok to use. I was hoping someone here had some feedback on them.

First off, I doubt that the modern slug is made from pure lead as muzzleloading roundballs are, if you can get the Foster slug in pure lead, that would be a plus...

Next, it may be hard to use a patch on a flat bottomed projectile, it's a hollow base too, if you do use a patch, you'll need to allow for the extra thickness, so a smaller diameter slug will be needed...

If you load with over-powder card, fiber wad and then the slug, don't forget the over-shot card (or two) to keep the undersize slug in place, I would also lube the flutes of the slug to reduce leading...

Both Lyman and Lee sell moulds, so I would be casting my own. That way I could be sure about the lead. Lyman has a foster type and a waisted pellet type. Both are smooth sided and designed to be loaded in standard trap wads. They would never touch the barrel in my Trapper. That is why I thought I might get away with using them. Lee has a foster type in 1 ounce and 7/8ths designed to be loaded in a regular trap wad also. Would be a way to use the shotgun for deer until I get a smoothbore. I have the 50 caliber barrel for it and I sighted it in yesterday with the Lee Trashcan Target minis.

I like the Lyman Shotgun Sabot Slug #2654112. I cast these from recycled lead of unknown composition. My slugs are a little lighter than they would be if they were pure lead. I use the Winchester AA trap wads with these and get very good accuracy if I clean between each shot. Terminal ballistics are spectacular. I have killed three dear with this loading and each was almost instantly dead on the spot. I have also experimented with a .678 round ball in the same wad. I have found that I have to reduce the powder charge to get acceptable accuracy. I have not shot the round balls at anything other than paper because the slugs work so much better.

get most of my shotgun stuff from them. Have tried most everything that they offer and the lymans work best for my gun. The fun is figuring out what works best. The 678 RB's are from Cains, would be interested in a mold if anyone knows where to get one.

What do you think about a paper patch on that foster slug?

Haven't tried it but should work well. I don't really like putting plastics down the barrel. Got away from testing with this due to deer season and a .50 flintlock.

can only find a .600 and a .690 listed on their web site. Is this an older mould that might be available elsewhere?

I will have to go look again, I looked in a lot of places that day. Well, I can't find it now, and Lee says it was not one of theirs anyway if I did see it. I was sure about it, but it might have been a typo I saw also. Sorry! Don't even ask Lee about cutting a custom one. 175$ is nuts.
