Alright guys......

I don't want to ruffle any feathers here, But I started collecting parts and making patterns to build a boys rifle,.... Problem is, I cant seem to find a suitable lock that would come close to proportion to this rifle (approximately 2/3 scale). I have an old CVA lock (that always looked a little small in scale to me), But it looks a little to large compared to the rest of the parts I have collected/made

I have been looking around hoping a pistol lock would suffice,... But no dice. I am looking to stay within a tight budget on this gun,.... So here's my question.

You guys got any ideas ?..... maybe you have one in the parts drawer that might fit the bill.... Any constructive ideas welcome.

In the track of the wolf catalog they have a lock called Becky's Lock. This is the smallest lock they offer and available in flint or percussion. You should be able to find it on their web site....................watch yer top knot.....................

If you need to build on a budget the one area you shouldn't skimp on is the lock. You can recycle CVA or Traditions barrels and other parts but you will be best served spending the money on a small Siler from Chambers for the lock (or one of the L&R pistol locks depending on style of build).

Reason being? Cheap locks frustrate shooters. Being a "boy's" gun for a kid or any beginner, you want it to be a trouble free and as enjoyable as possible to keep then interested.

Enjoy, J.D.

jd makes a good point, those CVA/Traditions locks do need some work to be reliable,,

But with budget constraints;

If your going to inlet the lock to a blank stock, there's nothing carved in stone that say's the CVA lock has to stay it's original size.

With the internals installed I think you'll see areas that can be removed from the lock plate to shrink it down a bit,

Harms Way,

I have a Pedersoli Kentucky Pistol percussion lock, drum, and nipple that is a tad smaller than a TC. It's 4-3/8" long and 15/16" tall. It has never been used.

It is the same size as the one on my Kentucky Rifle, and I swap the flint lock from my rifle to pistol, depending on mood. I have no need for the perc, and if the size is right, make me an offer. They go new at VTI for $170.00. Below is a link to see what it looks like.

I'll try this again.....(Last one didn't post ?)

The lock in question should be about 3-1/2" to 3-3/4" long and about 3/4" tall....to be within proportions. Back in the 70's I ended up making a few locks myself, I still have the ability to case harden and temper the materials,... BUT !... what a pain in the neck. The main spring and tumbler being the worst part of the process.

I did make a hammer for a man doing the same thing back in those days.... He used a very small lock off a old external hammer SXS shotgun,.. if i remember right it had good proportion,.. and was a pretty high quality lock. :hmm:

Either way please keep the ideas coming  ,... And if your interested, when I come up with a plan... I will keep you all in the loop.

Apparently my memory ain't so good,.... After the last post I remembered, I have an old Crescent SXS I am re-stocking,.... So I grabbed it to take measurements.......

It was a Swing and a miss !

Well, you are trying to fit a lock to a design. You could try the approach of designing the rifle around the parts. I have used several CVA percussion locks on a couple of kids guns. They have worked out ok, but I won't do it again. Will use a Bailes or Becky's next time around or maybe even one of the Golcher ohio style locks.

Thanks guys........ But still looking for a suitable lock,.... And trying to talk myself out of trying to build one (after all these years).

Well guys I laid out the pattern for the side plate and the hammer...... Right now I'm trying to finish a Hot Rod project for a friend that is in very bad health.. But looks like I'll be making a lock myself.... UNLESS ! you guys come up with a solution before I start cutting steel.

check out abecky perc. lock

This lock is almost identical in size to the pistol flintlock, but not completely interchangeable with it. Right hand only.
