Question,

Can a small Siler percussion lock be replaced by a
small Siler flintlock? Are they an exact fit or would the flintlock need inletting? Also, are there any disadvantages to a small Siler lock in a 40 cal.rifle used to kill targets compared to a large Siler.

Its great to know there is a place like this to go to when you have a question. Thanks for all the great info. I have learned alot just listening to you guys.

You shouldn't have much of any problems making the switch. Possibly a bit of trimming somewhere but usually not much. Get a touchhole machined to replace the drum & you're good to go. The small siler flint is a well made lock, I've made many guns around them & had no problems to speak of. One good thing is that Chambers is setting there by his phone even as we speak if you do have a problem.

One thing you will have to do is remove a bit of wood where the hammer hits the top of the lock plate. A small rat-tail file & some inlet black works fine.

I have a 45 with a small siler flintlock and boy is it fast. I am puting a large one on the lancaster I am building so it will be interesting to see if there is any diffrence.

I recently handled a .40 that had both small Siler locks. The plates on this rifle were interchangeable. The drum/vent liner swap was the only change necessary.

I see no reason why a Small Siler would be a disadvantage on a .40. They spark very well. A tricked up Small Siler was the fastest non-original lock I have ever timed. Only an original Manton and a Stoddenmyer were faster.

I have a .45 Kentucky that was built for a small Siler for the purpose of being able to switch back and forth from flint to perc. When you remove the drum you should be able to replce it with a vent liner and it should be in the proper place for the flintlock. Since you already have a Siler perc. you should not have to do much carving, if any at all for the lock internals.
