Thanks digger I'm getting some of the old timer guys that use to shoot NMLRA and other matchs and it seems the Brit back in 1770s was right, "sighted smoothbore ( aka smooth rifle ) can each out and touch someone if bored, sighted, loaded, and shot right.) Still would like some more info from anyone shooting these now, like how long your barrel is and how was it bored ( the barrel maker I talked with said a 003 taper from breech to muzzle) ect. Thanks Fred :hatsoff: ( NMLRA shoot is 30 to 130 yards at gongs.)

John Bivens had an article on the process of forging, reaming, and rifling a barrel by hand (done by the folks at Williamsburg, naturally) in Muzzleblasts a couple decades ago, and he mentioned that reaming and rifling was done from the breech to the muzzle. Why? Because the cutting bits wore during the process, and a slight choke was preferable to a slight funnel. The implication is that ALL firearms of the period had choked bores.

Hi FW, I bought the gun off of Ebay in 98 when they still sold guns. It's a Chambers built by a guy named G Alexander. He lives in northern Il. The add said it had a Getz barrel. It is 46 inches long. Some of the people I know that can shoot better than me use 42 inch barrels of different makes and some have the High pressure tubing for barrels. I have seen some amazing shots with smoothbores before I moved down here. Now I can't even find anyone around here that even knows what real Black Powder is. LOL

The main difference is the rear sight. Most smoothbore matches will not allow a rear sight. The rear sight gives you an advantage at the longer ranges. Allthough, I have seen some people shoot a front sight only smoothbore as good as someone with a rear sight

The main difference between a smooth rifle and a fowler or a musket is that a smooth rifle is a rifle that has no rifling, but otherwise looks like any other rifle. Without looking down the bore, you wouldn't know you weren't looking at a regular rifle.

I meant to say the difference between a Smooth Rifle and Smoothbore was the rear sight on the Rifle

The smoothrifle often has the griprail on the tg and a cheekpiece it is made to aim not just to point.
