Given the same barrel length and caliber, will a rifled or smoothbore barrel tend to give higher velocities with a patched round ball? Just wondering if one or the other has an edge. Happy

Watching Dualist 54 and Black Powder and Black powder TV velocities seem close. And powder makes a lot more difference.
Thomson Center got much lower velocity in their .56 smooth compared to .54 smooth
In theory a rifle with tighter loads should be a littler higher then a looser smooth, in practice there are too many variations.

I read an artical years back. Not a smooth bore vs rifled but a gun was shot with patched RB and another with just the RB. The RB w/o a patch had a higher velocity in theory because it didn't have to follow the rifling path.
