Squirrel season opens next weekend in Oregon, and My 62 smooth bore Renegade will get the honors.I haven't been squirrel hunting since a young man back in Arkansas. (Many years ago)We also have a fair population of Grouse, and that season will open soon. Another good excuse to make more smoke in the tall fir's. Then there's Deer season,Elk,and Bear...I'm starting to ramble!!!!

What load have you decided on for your black powder squirrel hunt?

nw hunter: You forgot turkeys. Here in Elkton they are thicker than fleas. Gunn

Yes, indeeed, ramble on. Then, post pictures in the hunting forum so we can see how you did.
I've never stopped hunting squirrel and it might be my favorite quarry. I hope you have a great day of it!

nw hunter,
I once leveled my 20 gauge smooth yeager at a tree rat who stopped momentarlly on a log. My load of 80 grs of 2fg and an equal volumn of #5 shot took the critter without a twitch. I had an over shot card over the powder and a half inch cushion wad and then an over shot card to top off the load.
Incidently, I was hunting fantail grouse in eastern PA at the time.

My Jackie Brown Carolina smoothbore also like equal volumes of powder shot........I use 70gr of 2fg and the same volume of shot with only using the overshot cards. 3 over the powder and one over the shot. Shoots a real nice round pattern at 30 yards always putting several shot in the aiming point (2 inch black spot).
Seem like if I use more shot the pattern is worse even though it slinging more shot at the target..........................Bob
