Hey all,

So My new england style fowler will be done at the end of the month. this is my first smoothie, and I need accessories. I see that fowlers have a Tulip Jag? is this an essential item? also what is the difference between that and a regular jag...other than flints , bore swab and the like is there anything else you guys would recommend? Im com[pletely new to to whole fowler concept and learning new

Tulip jag is mounted to the rod. It does not work as well as a modern jag for cleaning.
In my bag I carry
small bag of shot
20 balls
tin with lubed wads
a couple flints
a turn screw that fits your gun
a ball puller, POOKEY Buy two
I load round ball in a smoothbore with wads not patches.

Other than the obvious differences between PRB and Shot Load components, I carry the same kinds of Flintlock related items for smoothbores as I do rifles.
For a flat faced jag I use a 'button jag':

Shine keeps it simple. I like that.

I have his list plus a small, flat priming horn that fits in my shooting bag.

For cleaning I do have a fouling scraper to get the crud off the breech.

Since that Image I gave up on the large ball block and instead carry paper cartridges.

You need a good powder horn, a powder and shot measure (one that does both or two), a good bag and a way to carry shot.

following is in my bag
In my bag I carry

try you gun with bare balland wading. At 25 yards mine shoots the same as patched rb. Shines list is good. Give your self a fling with paper cartrdges.

Shine I'm hurt.....I can't believe you'd recommend buying two pullers! Geez you load fou balls into your barrel one time and you never live it down lol :haha:

Wait.... I don't think is let anyone forget four balls in one barrel.... At least not til they cry

Id expect youd wear one out the first day. Its good to have a spare for the next. Pookey,Just be thankful your nickname was not Four Balls, Or Dry Balls. :blah:

Bryon, Shine will not lead you wrong, good advise. Remember if we did,nt like you and enjoy your company we would ignore you instead of remembering you. See you at Spring Vous.

well then I ahve most of the stuff i just need some wads and cards i guess... man I priced the stuff....no one told me shooting shot is so expensive....lol and By expensive I mean it cost more than 10 cents per shot

Its almost cheaper to rob the shot out of modern skeet loads. I have a lot of partial boxes of various shot loads. Even some old paper shells.

yeah ordering shot aint no joke...the shipping is enough to induce involuntary twitching.....is it woirth casting your own shot? hmmm paper cartiges....are they better for shot than wads and such?

Back in the day Shotgun shells were made with cardboard hulls. I have a bunch that got wet eons ago and ive been robbing the shot out of them.

Really?

Bryon -- yeah, it is probably worth it to find trap and skeet shooters at the range who reload and ask them to buy a coupla bags of #5 shot. That's what you'll want for everything you shoot. Well, much of it anyway...

And then there's Buck-n-Ball. I recommend three #2 Buckshot (.27") pushing the 20 gauge ball -- these are the largest that three will fit on one plane and there is no chance of them jamming each other or the ball in a .62 smoothbore.

Placing orders are best done all at once due to shipping so think twice, buy once.

buckshot is illegal for hunting in NY, and there are shops that sell bags of shot ..the closest is 2 hours away...and i think is about 30.00 a bag? maybe..

As of May, what the hell is LEGAL in NY State!?

In any case, the Buck-n-Ball is for fun, not hunting. Huzzah!!!

Bry when you come up this spring for vous just stay. I live in woods and I can get to 5 gun shops in 40 minutes. One is opening Monday 10 minutes away.
