Allow me to save you much money and aggravation.

Choose a persona, THEN assemble your gun and gear.

To add :2 to what Trent said. Save yourself a lot of aggravation and money. Pick a persona that really means something to you. It can be based on the time frame of a local group of reenactors that you like to hang out with or family history.

I started out in the 80's wanting to be a Mountainy Man like everyone else. Then I noticed that there weren't any mountains within hundreds of miles from where I live. So I volunteered with a local museum that did 1836 now I do F&I and Rev War. Gear changes with every new timeframe. It is a lot cheaper to stick with one era than skip from one to another.

After you find your time period, then do the research and get a period smokepole.

Thank you all for your kind words yes i will pick my persona first.

My mother is from St.Francisville ILL and that is where George Rogers Clark crossed the wabash river when going to fort sackville (Vincennes)this is the era i'am looking at.

Again thank you all for your valuable infro

Here's some photos of my son's Clay Smith Carolina Trade Fusil or Carolina Gun.

Yes it is painted Red as were a good many originals. Some are documented as blue, spotted, vine painted or with designs attractive to the Indians. IMHO it's a really fun and neat gun.

In 1769 on his first Longhunt into Kentucky, Daniel Boone's hunting party was captured by the Shawnee. The Shawnee confiscated their horses, cache of hides, powder and all their rifles. Captain Will of The Shawnee Provided Boone with warning never to return and an old shot gun (also mentioned as a Trade Gun) and horn so the party would not starve afoot on their way out of Kanta-Kee.

You'll have to at least double your money but what you get is IMHO far far worth it. This is about the best priced full Custom gun available.
Time period...1714-1780
At least one or parts of one have been found converted to percussion.

Look at the Atlanta Cutlery antique military rifles- You will spend around 400 dollars but you get the real thing. For $50.00 extra you can have the rifle hand selected. Hope this helps!

As mentioned if you think you are going to evolve a persona you can save a lot of money by choosing that first. :v That said people rarely do, simply because each character has features that they like.

Many people started with the mountain man and a good half-stock caplock, no fiddling with those dumb flintlocks, plenty of documentation and story books. Life is good.

Then one day the longrifle fairy flies bye and sprinkles pixie dust on you and life will not be complete until till you have become a long hunter with a fine flinter.

Living in the Illinois country you will eventually find that the richest part of the state’s history is not Abe Lincoln but the fur trade before the French and Indian war. More pixie dust and suddenly you are carrying a smoothbore trade gun and learning French paddling songs. :hmm:

I won’t even go into the Military aspects of these periods but you get the point, rare is the person that starts and finishes with the same persona.

As for the India made guns you will find lovers and haters. But remember, if you buy cheap it is yours forever, unless you give it away. If you buy high dollar it may appreciate over time. Usually the more you pay, the more valve it will hold. This helps when you need that new gun.

Sometimes however you just buy a gun for the fun shooting it.
