once youve broken it in, ill bet youll need quite a bit bigger powder measure.. ill guess 100-125gr 2f for max accuracy.. my one in 66 square bottom .012 deep rifling 42 inch barrel .62 cal uses 100 gr 2f in summer, 115 in winter to achieve maximum accuracy at 50 yards.. .610 round ball, .020 patch and a little bag sized mallot to drive them in.. .. sure does womp them deer tho.. my son is starting to get spots for ME now.. he says his girlfriends dad will let me shoot a cow elk off thier haystack next fall.. well see.. first i have to get a tag, then he has to stay on good terms with the little lady, and her dad, and then the tough part, the elk have to cooperate.. according to him they are all over that hayfield every day.. her dad and her brother (12 years old) both shot big bulls last year.. same old story, family/owners gets the bulls, good freinds get the raghorns, down the line friends , get the cows, the rest keep out!!! i cant blame them.. several years ago one rancher had two of his ery expensive breeding bulls shot by someone, unhappy/frustrated with his luck, or just mean.. ... dave.....................ps for you beginning hunters, no, the elk dont stand on the haystack.. :rotf:

80 and 90grns Goex 3F were very accurate when it was a smoothbore...I just used 80grns for deer season as all my shots were 50yds or less and the big 325grn balls were all complete passthroughs as it was ...figured I'd start at the same place and experiment up a little with both 3F and 2F.

Why anybody would want to ruin a perfectly good barrel by puttin them deep gouges on the inside is beyond me :rotf:

I gotta agree with 'im, Roundball. It ain't right! Dammit! It just ain't right! :shocked2: I don't care if'n ya does got 'nother one that you ain't damaged! :haha:

Okay, okay. If that's what you really want, a perfectly good smoothie with a barrel that's got grooves scratched in it, then that's OK with me, just don't whip that mongrel out when I'm anywhere near! :blah:

Seriously, sounds cool. I hope she meets your expectations and harvests many a deer (with your help, of course).

Roundball,
My .60 rifled in 1 in 66 requires that I load sufficiently tight that it takes a mallet on the short starter if I am to group past fifty yards. Now yours in 1 in 72 might not need it quite that tight. Still it is only 6 inches longer in the twist. Consider using pretty tight loads. Have fun experimenting.
God bless.

Ed Rayl was out of pocket last Friday but I caught him first thing this morning...he said "the barrel's done, rifling looks good, put a little crown on it".

Mailed him the MO this morning too, so he'll get it Wednesday and if he's on his game he could get the barrel to UPS before the weekend...if so, I should get it and be able to shoot it the following weekend.

Man, talk about a watched pot never boils!

(okay everybody picture roundball, great big smile, skipping down the driveway to meet the big brown truck,,,,may even be singing "zippitiy do da"! got the pic? let us know when ya get it RB...and careful...someone may be watchin! :winking: RC

All rigthttttttttttttttttttt...UPS has the barrel so I should get it before next weekend for sure from my West VA neighbor state...

"UPS has the barrel so I should get it before next weekend for sure from my West VA neighbor state" :rotf: you must have a different UPS. Ive found the 62 smooth and rifled to be really different in loads ect. Fred :hatsoff:

Ya didn't happen to ask him about mine did ya? I know they were both being done at the same time. Our rifles are now sorta related. Just so ya know I'm not the card sending kinda guy....

:haha: :haha:

I wouldn't be surprised...planning to start out with the same thing I used when it was a smoothbore so I'll at least have a frame of reference, then experiment from there

I sure didn't but based on a comment he made a couple weeks ago, about having to "set up" a different configuration to do the rifling on my GM .62, I have to believe he would have done them both at the same time before he reset his equipment to some other configuration.
