70grns Goex FFFg is the magic number in this .54cal GM Flint smoothbore!

Tried 100, 90, and 80grns Goex 2F...100 & 90grn groups were worthless at several inches wide with a wide flyer even beyond that...with 80grns 2F the groups started to improve but still 5" at 50yds...AND...always had a wild flyer several inches off to the side no matter how had I tried to eliminate everything that could cause it.

Switch to 3F...90grns 3F was actually a little better but had that flyer...80grns 3F started to look very good at a few inches but still had a nagging flyer in every group.

In frustration, I decided to try 70grns 3F which is below what I normally like for deer hunting...and I was shocked at the results...like somebody had flipped a switch...some holes touching, a cloverleaf, etc, and most importantly no flyers !!

Tried a 5 shot group with 80grns again, it opened back up a little plus had that nagging flyer...back to 70grns and tight groups with no flyers.

Never had a barrel do this before...don't understand the flyer...took pains to clean, lube, and load the bore precisely the same way every time...using wonderwads every time, patches were immaculate of course...a mere 10grns difference and it's unbelieveably accurate...go back up above 70grns and the fylers start up again.

Interesting coincidence...the best shot pattern was 70grns Goex 3F...now it's clear the best PRB charge is also 70grns Goex 3F.

That's lighter than I like for deer hunting...muzzle energy falls between a full power .45cal & .50cal PRB load, but I have a stand where the maximum distance is only 40-50yds, so I might try it some there this season.

What about 75 grains?

Might give you more energy and still no flyers...

round ball I have had the same thing happen with my bess, it was one real starnge animal, one thing that could help, if you cut your patches at the muzzle for some reason or
another the smoothies don't like precut patches at all, I guess the rifleing is a bit more forgiving than the smoothies, I also used bb and olive oil as lubes the smootie seems to favor the olive oil, (extra virgin ::), glad your enjoying your new barrel. bb75

Could be...still puzzled about 'why' the flyers...figured after hunting season is over I might experiment some more with other things like using 2 or 3 overpowder wads or different overpowder wads, something like that...if nothing improves with that, I can also try the 75grns

RB,

The deer won't notice a thing between 70gr 3f, and any heavier load! A .54 rb is potent medicine.

Happy Hunting,

:agree:...particularly at the typical woods distances I deal with...more than anything I'm just puzzled at what causes such a wild flyer with heavier charges...that 70grns can make a ragged hole, but charges above that cause a flyer to jump 6" off to the side...

RB..I'm not shooting a smoothie ( yet) but in my .50 cal I always liked 90 gr of FFF with a .490 PRB for hunting. Last year I somehow got my target measure mixed up with my hunting measure. My target measure is 70 gr FFF. Shot three deer with it and all three shots broke shoulders or ribs, passed thru and left big exit wounds. Ranges were two inside 80 yds and one at 96 steps. Only one of those deer made it past 20 yds before falling and he only went about 50.

Humm, I too have found that a "light" load is far more accurate. I've found 65 grains of 3f just knocks out the center at 25 yards with my Sharon 12 gauge shooting a .715 PRB. Using a 25 yard pistol target, I've managed a 50-4x (still got beat by someone using a flint tradegun with a 50-5x :cursing: :shake: ) but that 65 grain load has a lot of knockdown power!

I'm sure that'll be the case...a .530 is a big ball and at only 40-60yds, 70grns should be plenty...I am going to experiment after the season and see if I can juggle things like wads to get rid of the flyer with larger charges.

I'm starting this season with a .58cal, but will definitely hunt the .54cal smoothbore some

Your experience is very similar to mine.I have been shooting smoothbores for 10-12 years, and have noticed that some are very particular about what they will shoot well. The one I shoot the most, a .54 smooth rifle (with sights) absolutely refuses to group at all with a patched ball with any load combination, but groups very well out to 75-100 yards with 70 gr. FFG,1/4" lubed fiber wad, naked .535" ball, and an overshot wad to hold the ball in place. It also does pretty good with paper cartridges. Contrary to what you might think, smoothbores seem to be more particular about loads than rifles,in my opinion.

What puzzles me is the "why"...

I understand inaccuracy or flyers from a failed patch...or a mis-aligned conical...or a worn muzzle...but this is a brand new smoothbore barrel, cleaned and lubed precisely the same for each shot, etc.

Even when I jack the powder charge up to 80-90grns 3F, group size at 50yds is still good enough to keep 99% on an orange 3" aim point sticker...EXCEPT...one will be sitting 6" way off to one side...and never in the same spot.

Just wish I understood what causes that to happen.
