Last week I was watching Into The West, at the start of the show they opened up a crate of brand new Brown Bess saddle ring carbines to trade to the Indians. I can't recall much else about the program except that crate full of brand new Bess Carbines!

One of the movie makers from the Hatfield and McCoy series said it best.

They like to be as historically accurate a possible but when making a movie entertainment comes first. When historical accuracy comes first we call that a Documentary.

Basically he is saying, facts give way to fiction for the sake of entertainment which is what movie making is all about.

This movie maker statement is usually just an excuse...is it more entertaining to use Brown Besses cut down with a saddle ring added, or just cheaper/easier?

Oh no, those are rare, special, Fourth Model Brown Bess'. The natives got a bargain.

British Elliot Cavalry Carbine 28 to 30 inch barrel late 1770s , looks like a pedersoli bess carbine with a cavalry slide bar , side plate is not the same as a bess to allow the fitting of the slide bar.Lots were made but not issued to British horse units at the time of your American Revolution

It's really not bad. Just don't watch it as a documentary or base a persona off of any of the characters. It's a decent story and has some really pretty scenery. I have the DVD set and pull them out and watch them on a rainy day every now and then.
