I'm going to do the triggergaurd soon. I'm thinking of using screws to attatch it. One in the rear triggergaurd plate and one in front. I'm also considering mortising the gaurd plates in the wood. Although I would rather see screws used with gaurd not mortised in as opposed to a mortised in if it's not done very well. Opinions please.

Trigger guards should ALWAYS be inlet And pinned.
Some Southern guns did use screws. Personally, I think it looks cheap.

By mortising, do you mean inletting? The front and rear extensions should absolutely be inlet. I don't recall seeing a photo of an original that was not. If you're talking about inletting the tabs used to pin a guard, take them off if you're going to use screws. Sounds like you're using a cast, mass produced guard. The front tab is probably where the screw would need to go anyway.

My opinion, pins are way better cosmetically. Screws are not so good.

Hey Flintandsteel one more question. I always use 1/16 in. Pins. Do you like those or the next size bigger? Which would be PC?

Pin the trigger guard, but consider bumping the size of the pins. The pins on my SMR were all bumped up from the Kibler pin stock to 0.078 "music wire" (basically 5/64 in) I bought at Ace Hardware. Easily rounded and blued and hold tighter than the 1/16 in pins. Redrill your pin holes with a 5/64 bit.

Actually on early colonial era guns it was common for the front of the trigger guard to be pinned and the rear was held with a screw

Personal preference, I use 1/16” pins for all hardware. 5/64” on barrel and simple trigger.

Where did you get that gaurd ? I really like it. It doesn't look like the gaurd is inletted any? I blew thr pic up and it does look to be inletted.

The guard is inletted to the bevel, front and rear. The inlet is just over 1/16" deep.
