Snapsack

Made up a snapsack for myself out of canvas. Even for a sewing-challenged person like me, it only took about 1 1/2 hours. Of course, Mr. Singer's ingenious device doesn't hurt :wink:. Perhaps one of these days I'll hand-sew one out of linen, using waxed linen thread, but for now, this'll do for me.

It's approximately 36" long, with an 8"-9" internal diameter.

I like your take on the closure for it, what I did for mine was run the strand within the hemline, but I think yours will work better.
hand sewing is a pain but at the same time can be quite enjoyable if you take the time to enjoy it! :hatsoff:

a snapsack has been around since Roman times, it is the glorious combination of a haversack and a knapsack all in one! wear it on your back with the opening toward the front, and you can stuff the thing with just about anything you could possibly need on the trail or in camp,wrap your bedroll around it, keep some jerkey or bread close up to the front right at hand, keep your clothes and camp gear(copperware etc.) in it, the only real limit is the size you make it.
unfortunately the first one I made is a bit too small (diameter wise) so I can't put everything I'd like to, but another, larger one is currently on deck after I finish a few other projects that have been waiting to be finished.

:hmm: kinda looks like an inverted back quiver. I can see some potential in one. Do you have a pattern or perhaps share the dimentions?

Got it, that's a great idea. I have my quiver made to function that way. Definitely going on my "to do list."

While I do not have any documentaion on its use in the fure trade era, most of mine are dated late 1600's to mid 1700's :idunno:
I do know that a "military style" sack would be in leather with a buckled leather strap (if that helps at all) :thumbsup:
The canvas I started with was around 24x36, but as I said it is a bit small in diameter for me so I'll use a piece 26x38 this time and see if the extra coupla inches helps at all.
