Oil, can they be used as a patch lube? One of the cans has a label from Zayre Dept Store on it which tells me that i probably didn't have gray hair when i bought it.

These are both boot dubbing, yah? Sno Proof is beeswax and lanolin, with some petroleum distillates. I don't know whatall is in mink oil (mink, presumably) but I've heard of fellows using it for patch lube. Myself, I use the yellow stuff that smells like winergreen.

When I was a kid(40s) My dad tooks us to a store, called Coldtrap on 250 by Tappen Dam,We each got a pair of brogans(shoes) and a can of snow-proffing. The shoes were Wolverine Brand, cost was 5.00,can't remember what the proofing was. These shoes had to last you all winter, so I kept them greased up good. You could buy a ham swandich and a cke for a nickel. I use the proofing on leather and mink for the guns. There is a poster on here that uses mink for patches. I use deer tallow myself. Dilly

I also used Snow-Proof on my Woverine shoes in the 40s,the can is still the same color and it would protect our shoes from the cow manure and urine which would do job on shoes in no time. The rich kids wore those artic over shoes with the 5 steel buckles on them.

AS a kid we never put anything on our shoes. AYou can't waterproof a pair of Keds anyway. But when I lived up in Alaska, we used two products. One waqs a silicon liquid for the stitching and then for the leather we used a grease like substance. One of them (I think the grease) was called Snow-Seal. I can't remember the name of the other stuff It was a long time ago, over twenty years now, but the grease came in a blue can like a small can of paint. The liquid was in a screw top bottle with a wire sticking down from the cap and what looked like a bore mop. Used together you could keep your feet dry in just about any weather.

Don't think ye want to use petroleum distillates fer a patch lube, that stuff can be a might flammable!

If you are asking about Sno Seal it is mostly beeswax with mineral oil as a softening agent. I use it as a patch lube and it works for me. :winking:

I tryed mink oil, plain lard, olive oil, and several other things until I found Go-Jo white hand cleaner, it's the best I've used. cheap too.

dont use anything with silicone, some boot greases and mink oil pasts use it.. to me its like putting glue in your barrel on a cold day.. i use tc lube in the winter, and neatsfoot oil in the summer.. foolproof on all my rifles... shotguns i stick to tc lube in the tube, gets messy in hot weather tho.. but sure makes that bore shiny if i use enough between nitro card and fibre wad..dave
