my dragoon pistol has a tapered and flared octagon to round barrel. I have made and soldered the front lug to the barrel. I am not the most skilled at this, and I think the clean up takes more time than the soldering. Slag and flux everywhere! :haha:

So I have a little spider front sight to put on. Clean up will be a pain, but here is the real question. How do I solder the front sight on without having the front lug fall off?
:shocked2:

immerse the lug area into water before soldering your sight.

We used this technique in the raidiator shop for small area repairs.

Wrap a wet rag around the barrel and lug. If you are using low temp silver solder, you only have to stay on the sight for a little bit with the heat.

Any sort of heat sink on the lug should do it. As far as clean up goes after the soldering, I found that sand blasting does a good job of cleaning up the solder. Of course this will also take any other finish off, but if the barrel is still "in the white" and needs a finish you will be ok.

They make a wonderful product called "Heat Stop" as well.

You put a heat block paste around the area & it till blaok the heat from going all over the place. I use it all the time on knifes so I can solder the guards on them & not change the temper of the steel of the blade part. The stuff is really amazing & works well..... You can get it at Texas Knife Supply & probably other places. A plumbing supply place may also carry it.
