Hello, just started building and wanted to post a few things I've made so far.

I've started getting the parts together to build a "parts" Musket.
The type an any guy would have used for militia muster in the 1750-1770 time frame. I've got a great mentor in my dad who has been building since he was a teenage. Here is a link to one of his guns.

Hey Sean!

Stuff looks great, I especially like the cartridge box!
Did you use some kind of scrap lumber, or go out and buy some wood?
I'm asking because a cartridge box like that has been on my list for a while....Unless you want to make another and trade for a knife :)

Thanks for the kind words. That box is Alaska Yellow Cedar. Not HC or a good choice on my part. It is brittle and cracked when nailed. Even with pilot holes. Next try will be with maple.

Welcome to the Forum.
I too am in Indiana (Fishers) and look forward to your progress.
Where do you shoot at?
Good luck and see you around!!

Chers, DonK

Thanks! I will add that one to my list. "Of Sorts for Provincials" is at the top of my book list right now.

Yep, Dad is a wealth of knowledge. I've gotten alot of info from the people on this forum also.

Not HC but you might try sycamore or elm for the cartridge box next time. Neither is as heavy as maple and both are unlikely to split. Especially elm!

Oh yeah. Especially elm. I was in my teens when the Dutch Elm disease went through here and the city had to cut down hundreds of elms. We still heated the house with wood and coal and Dad had the city drop off a couple of dump truck loads of elm biscuits. Sections of trunk about 12 inches thick. We had to split and stack the stuff for chores. What a job that was. Burned real hot though. excellent fuel.
