Had a proud dad moment in the woods. My oldest son has never shown much interest in hunting. He has been shooting with me for several years and is a pretty good shot but never wanted to go hunting. This year he surprised me by asking if he could go deer hunting with me this season. Of course I agreed and gathered up his shooting supplies to get him ready to hit the woods. When we were clean and loading his rifle I noticed i had to drop the hammer about 3 times to get the cap to pop. The rifle is my grandpa's oldest gun and I thin he changed the nipple out to a #10 so the #11 caps don't go all the way on. Since I noticed this I told my son that if the gun didn't fire in the woods he would have to keep the gun up and just try and pull the hammer back and try again until it fired.

We went out and found a good spot on the ground behind some brush next to a couple of trees. After a while we saw a small buck working down the hill towards us and I pointed it out to him. I had him stand up and get ready and if it gave him a shot to take it. Just as the buck got close enough to shot we noticed a bigger one coming through the brush to our right. I pointed him out to my son and had him wait a bit to see if the bigger one would get close enough. The bigger one more off through some thick brush and the little guy stepped out in the open. My son settled in to shoot and sure enough it just snapped the first time. He did great though and kept the gun up and snapped it 2 more times before it fired on the 4 try. He made a perfect heart shot and the buck didn't go 25 yards and dropped dead. I couldn't be prouder. Hopefully he is hooked for life.

The doe is mine i got a few days later. Glad to have 2 in the freezer since i didn't get any last year. Thanks for reading.

WAY TO GO, GENTLEMEN!

Congratulations to you both! 👍

Your son has some incredible composure under pressure to have to hammer back four times and still execute that good of a shot! A lot of experienced hunters would fall apart in that situation. Good for him!

Hopefully you guys can get a new nipple installed to fix that issue. A lot of times deer don't hang around when they hear that click.

Some nipples are straight and some are tapered. Same with different brands of caps. CCI are the worst for my guns, however, sometimes you can ease the hammer down and push hard on it with your hand or a block of wood and that will seat the caps so they go off regularly.

You are a lucky man. I have one son i took with me when he was small, but the older he got the less he wanted to go. That's okay. We can't force them. But looking back, I often wonder why my love of the wildwood didn't flow to him. My dad took me always and my best memories are of him and I together in the VA mountains. I am thankful though for my boy who I see most every day. His name is Christian and he lives up to that name in every way. I guess we all were not meant to roam the woodland solitude.
