What the heck, rust?

I have used a lot of Pyrodex as well and never had a problem? I have one rifle I bought in the eighties and it is all that has ever been used in it and the barrel is fine? I use water, soap with patches made from old tee shirts. I lay the barrel over two burners on our cooking range and get it very hot to drive away moisture. I then use 3in1 oil and wipe the bore real good. The next day I run a patch down the Barrel to remove the oil and reoil it! If I see the least bit of rust I will run multiple patches down the barrel and re oil again. I think it is lack of cleaning or waiting to long to clean that is the problem. Black powder will cause a barrel to rust if not cleaned as well.

I use 3 in 1 also with no problems . We will be told soon how bad that is

My Seneca was trying to rust after cleaning so I tried the alcohol flush after cleaning with Dawn and cool water. The alcohol was the missing link in in my process, learning a little daily on this forum.

Dr Samuel Johnson is right about Olsen Johnson being right! Pyrodex has some very nasty stuff in it! When I had to use it, I cleaned at least 3 times and checked the bore every day after that……and sometimes STILL got rust. Almost every gun I’ve seen with 3 exceptions, were rust buckets with the proud owner using pyrodex.

I think after you cleaned it.. dry patch it. Oil of choice.

I wouldn't buy a cleaner. How much was that little bottle?..

use Poland Spring from Maine if your going to buy a cleaner.

We mostly all agree water to clean It's 50 50 on adding a little soap.

Majority is no on pyrodex. But I've used it a little and didn't have that happen.

It's oil of choice.. were all over the place on that subject here kinda..

The residues of black powder and Pyrodex are equally corrosive. The agent of that corrosion is sulfur.

For many years i cleaned up or attempted to clean up rifles that were ruined by shooters/hunters who neglected same. Finally i tired of messing with ruined muzzleloaders and just said no.

Guess what? A neglected gun that fired Pyrodex looks exactly like a neglected gun that fired black powder.

Prior to leaving the range i swab the bore of my rifle with a patch wet with Windex Multi Purpose Cleaner, formerly Windex with vinegar The vinegar dissolves the residue which is base. Sometimes it fizzes .

1. At home the bore is swabbed.

2. The bore is cleaned with patches moist with tap water followed by dry patches.

3. The bore is swabbed with a patch moist with WD 40 followed by dry patches.
4. The bore is swabbed with a patch moist with Militec1.

BTW: My guns don't rust.
