I got skunked. He did not. We originally were going to wait till the bp season but the neighbor shot a buck on the opener of our regular gun season and my kid wanted to go. This am, I set him up on a ridge coming from a balsam swamp on the edge of our field. at about 1030, I heard the unmistakable sound of 85 grains of black death on fire, sending a .490 ball to it's destination. The i heard, "Dad! Dad!" When i got to him, he said he hit it but it ran into the balsam swamp. So we waited for 20 minutes and proceeded to track. It was dead in the tag alders. ran about 60 yards. A good sized 4 pointer. Well, maybe a 3 1/2 pointer. He is thrilled. Its in the garage as we speak. He is already talking about buying a bow and flinter(translation:Dad is going to buy me those). I think we will wait till the bp season opens before going out again. Another one hooked

Congrats to your son and you too.Sounds like quite a day.Got any pictrures?

yes, as soon as I figure out how to post. I feel like I just shot my first deer. What memories are made of. He is showing it off now to his friends.

Great account Sachem, and give my congratulations and best wishes to your son! My son got his first with my .270 before I got into shooting flintlocks, but I was also there when he got his first with my hand-me-down flinter. It is amazing how each of those moments are so clearly etched in your mind. Well done, father and son! :hatsoff:

Yes, but, we know the old 14 pointer is still hanging around. He is hiding till the regular gun season is over. That's when we will be waiting for him. I am so excited. I was worried that as time went on and he didnt get a deer, he would lose interst. Today is not that day. All he wants to do is talk deer hunting

Congratulations to your son on his first deer.. and to you for taking the time to teach him right.. it all pays off in the end.

Muzzleloader season will be much better.

Yes, I hope it is. I did not want to hunt the reqular gun season but my son decided Sat. afternoon he wanted to go. Just as a side note, I have read articles over the years lamenting the fact that people use prb for hunting. I have read articles about how inefficient the prb is. This is the 5th deer we shot with prb(50 caliber) and I never had a loss. His deer went the farthest that I have seen with prb and he hit it fairly high. But it still did not go far. Now maybe he can take his first bear someday with the 50 caliber prb, and myself also. Stout powder loads in the 80-90 grain 3fg seems to work magic :hatsoff:

congrats to your son!
in florida thats a monster sized deer :winking:

must admitt i have never got one :(

not much here but raunchy wild hogs

Congratulations to your son. That is a big Amen, there is no finer feeling or pride than this to a hunter.

Congragalations to your son on his first deer. I can remember my sons first deer. It was the first time he had been gun hunting for deer and was shooting a Traditions .50 cal that he built from a kit. He was pretty proud. Here is a Picture.

Congratulations! Seeing my Son take his first deer was a moment I'll never forget - forever etched in my mind. I can imagine it's the same for you. Now you'll have to get a bigger one to show him how it's done!
