Now that Cabellas doesn't carry the inexpensive black plastic locking case for long rifles (and our 54"+ matchlocks), what are the alternatives?

Cabellas has a new aluminum-look case for around $200 -- over twice the cost of the old plastic case (made by Hoppes?).

Anything else out there? Nice to have it locking for airline transport.

thanks for the links -- at the first one I couldn't find any of the inexpensive hard cases long enough for our matchlocks which average 54-60" in length.

Can you tell me the product name or maker?

the second link looks like a top-end product, and I think the Cabella's aluminum case is cheaper but am not sure.

thanks!

Made my own -- heavy as lead, ugly as sin....but it worked for my first flight back East to a muster, even deep enough so that it held my sword!

After that I've been using the long Hoppes case, which they have now stopped making, worse luck.

But I'm looking for solutions for other new shooters. Crazy for them to drop nearly half the price of the gun on a guncase....

I've got my "Words of Wisdom" for new matchlock shooters online in a pdf -

Some pcs. of 3/4 white pine a sheet of 1/4 in. luan some egg crate bedding, hinges and a lock hasp . Make it any size you want.

that almost perfectly describes the one that I built -- heavier empty than a commercial case full with two muskets!

It also gets regarded with more suspicion at the airline counter. Of course the fun part of flying with muzzleloaders is proving it ain't loaded at the counter. You have to wave it around and tell the nice person that if it was loaded the ramrod makes a click sound, if unloaded a clunk sound -- then drop the ramrod down the barrel and think happy thoughts!

Easier is to use a vent prick and probe the vent, but that doesn't convince everyone. Hey, as long as guys in black don't rappel down from the ceiling and tackle me at the counter, I regard it as a success.

:)

Ah don't no why ye dosn't jus tell um ta suck on tha barrel. Iffen they can suck air thru then it ain't loaded.
Corse ye might get a few who thin puttin a rifle barrel inta thar mouth sounds dangorus but ye jus tell um thar's a hole bunch o people what shoots black powder all the time an they do it after evry shot.

Iffen yer flite is late, ye can have some fun by waitin till the guard has the muzzle in his mouth an jus yell "DONT DO IT!!
YER BOSS WILL GIVE YE THAT RAISE, I PROMISE!!!"

Jus a wonderin, can't they jus stick yer gun in the X-Ray machine an look ta see iffen thar is a lead ball in thar?

I called Cabela's last year to inquire about that case. They told me it was a seasonal item and they only carry it during the fall/hunting season. I can't say if that's correct, or if that case is no longer being made. Maybe you could call them and ask if they will have it again this fall. Or email Hoppe's and ask them if they still make it.
