Anyone know of a cheap source of .50 cal sabots for .45 pistol slugs? Thought I'd try shooting some 230-255 gr. slugs in my 1-48 twist .50 cal. If accurate a Hornady XTP slug would be deadly on deer at say 12-1300 fps.

why use expensive sabots and jacketed pistol bullets when a round ball is better and cheaper?

Wrong premise. Wrong conclusion. A Hornady XTP bullet is not going to be more deadly at that velocity on a thin skinned animal like a deer, than a Patched Round Ball of .490 diameter. Who cares where you can buy sabots, when you don't need to use them, and shouldn't waste the money buying them in the first place!?! Those bullets will blow right through the deer, leaving less energy in the animal than any PRB will do on its worst day. Yes, it will kill a deer, but if you read through the Hunting topic here on the forum, for the last 2 months members have been describing the deer's reaction to being hit with a patch round ball out of their guns. There are plenty of anecdotes here to draw a conclusion about the effectiveness of the PRB. If you want to hunt traditional, shoot PRB and Black Powder. If you really want to feel proud of your skills as a hunter, shoot flintlocks.

Whew! Good thing the poor guy did not ask a question about inlines. Don't forget that some folks questions are in order for them to become educated, not humiliated. :nono:

I don't think that telling a man that he is using a false assumption, which is leading him to a wrong conclusion is humiliating him at all. Its the straightest way of telling him that his problem lies with his sources of information, and not his gun. I would not humiliate anyone knowingly, and I did not intend such here.

Perhaps you have a block on your shoulder waiting for someone to bump into it.

Using plastic sabots in his barrel to hunt deer is not necessary. Using pistol bullets in his rifle is not necessary. A lead Round Ball is more than adequate to kill any deer, which is what is stated objective was for asking his question. I was hoping to save him from wasting his money on gear he doesn't need. Whoever told him to use that stuff failed to mention his need to have some special solvents to get the plastic out of his barrel, in addition to the costs of buying the bullets and sabots. And they failed to tell him that he would take twice as long cleaning his barrel because he would have to use a solvent to get the plastic out of the barrel, and then soap and water to get the powder residue out of the barrel, whether he shoots Black Powder, or one of the new substitute powders. And, I suspect that no one told him how much more costly the subs are, or that they require a hotter percussion cap to ignite, and should not be used in flintlocks, etc.

If he has been humiliated by anyone, its the guy that steered him wrong with the advice to use pistol bullets and sabots in the first instance.

I believe there is a sabot system still sold by Thomson Center that uses a .429 dia bullet.

The sabot is in two halves with a felt doughut that holds things together at base.

The few times I shot those, I used a 255G SWC cast out of wheel weights. A chunk of cast lead will get it done if you just have to shoot a sabot. I suspect those XTR bullets go for a price.

You are going to practice with your hunting combination aren't you?

Then there is the PRB, the mini, maxi and real if you don't want plastic in your life.

Have fun, shoot safe.

A friend gave me some sabots once and I tried them in my Hawken. They all keyholed.

Ditto on TC's "Break-o-way" sabot/.44cal pistol bullet combo...tried them and while accurate enough for deer hunting, I was never able to get stellar accuracy out of them, and never bothered trying them for deer as far as performance goes.

But, For what it's worth, TC .45cal 255grn Maxi-Hunters are tack drivers in my TC 1:48" barrels, I did shoot a few deer with them and they're just devastating on deer...used Oxyoke prelubed wonderwads under them to protect the base from heat and prevent/mimimize leading.

If you have not gotten those Hornady bullets yet You might be better off researching for a better bullet. It might be in your best interest to use something like T/C's Maxi Ball or any other solid conical. With jacketed bullets like the XTPs you run the risk of fragmentation at higher velocities therefore increasing the risk of losing more meat and not penetrating enough into an animal for the bullet to properly expend its energy. I made the mistake of using CVA Power belts. When I shot my deer this past season it entered the right shoulder fragmenting and completely destroyed that shoulder rendering the meat useless.

Has anyone used paper patched conicals in 50 cal rifles? What diameter would you use? This could be a more traditional method of getting higher sectional density.

The written word is sometimes a limitation on our ability to communicate. I was sure that I was seeing all caps when I saw the fourth response. :) Got to be a better way to let folks know the "word".

guncobbler,

Wrap some .011 paper round a White 460 Buckbuster bullet, rub with a lube. I use bear grease, it loads and works in 1-20, 1-38 twist T/Cs. I know, my avatar is a buck taken with a paper patched 460.

Now a days I sometimes play with a 350gr Precision Rifle Ultimate 1 .50 cal bullet wrapped with the same paper in an unmentionable gun with a .508 bore.

But I do find it much easier to just load a patch and ball, no fuss and the out come is usually the same. :v

Here is a sight I found

I tried a paper patched Lee Mini in my Lyman Deerstalker, and found the accuracy excellent, but recoil was more than I wanted. I tried every bullet I could get my hands on, and even took a few deer with them. After all that, I have returned to shooting round balls, and will never go back to any bullet in my muzzleloaders.

Thanks Swamprat and Playfarmer. Knew there would be someone out there with paper patch experience. Might be nice to set up a slug gun for long distances and let some loose at 4 or 500 yards. I've got one with an Ed Rayl barrel that cuts some tight groups but haven't gotten around to putting a long range sight on it. GC
