Anyone else here from Reno, NV? Not a single gun store I have been to carries real black powder. I have found a few websites to order from, but they only take large orders and charge a big hazmat fee. So does anyone know where to get powder in Reno, NV? Even if I had to drive two hours to California it would be better than to mail order.

One other side question, I have heard that substitute never works in a flintlock; does anyone here use substitute in a flintlock?

Check Graf & Sons: http://www.grafs.com/powders/3522 . The last time I talked with them the price was the same for 5 lbs. as it is for 50 lbs. The Haz Mat fee is not that big and is per shipment, not per can. There use to be a couple of places in Sacramento that sold black powder, but they stopped selling it before I left. Yes, you do need real black powder in flintlocks. If you can find a black powder club, sometimes they will put in a big order for the club members. Good luck.

I have used substitute in the main charge,Pyrodex, but to make it work you have to dump in a bit of 3f first so that blackpowder is sitting at the touch hole.

I used 60 grains of Pyrodex sitting on 12 grains of 3f. It worked well and I only did it because at the time I could only get one can of real powder.

Even with the hazmat fee, ordering is still much cheaper per pound than buying in a store. If you have any shooting buddies that are into black powder, you guys might get together to split a case or half a case or whatever. I mail order all of mine because I can't find it locally and gunshow prices are twice as much per pound.

Try Coonies. Nice folks. They don't take credit cards. Send them a check and when it clears they will send you your powder. I reckon if you don't mind the drive you could pick it up yourself.

Try contacting your local NMLRA representative, Patrick Walker, in Minden. His phone number is 775-267-1391 and his email address is [email protected]. He can probably tell you where to buy it locally if there is a local place that sells it or he can tell you where your closest black powder club is. They may put your name in the pot when they order a case.

Go to the links section on this forum, and find the link to GOEX. Or just google "GOEX". They have a map of the USA, with a designation of the local distributor for each state, or region. Scroll down to get the Distributors phone number, and email address. Call the Distributor. He can send you to the nearest retailer, or he will sell you the powder direct, shipping it to your home.

Most dealers who do carry Black Powder, don't advertise the fact in their stores, because of all the concern about domestic terrorism, which spawned the current restrictive regulations on storing and shipping the powder.

That depends. I bought a couple pounds at Gander Mt. about a month ago for 13.99. With no Hazmat fee to pay, that’s cheaper than most deliveries. This week I checked the same Gander Mt. and the price per lb. was 17.99. If I bought 5 Lbs. even at that price that would have been 89.95 (plus tax). If I had purchased 5 lbs. from graf and sons that would be 96.95.

But of course, if you don’t have it locally, it’s definitely much easier to have it delivered.

I use the Graf brand, which is actually made in Germany. It is relatively reasonably priced, even with the hazmat fee, and they will accept a minimum order of only five pounds. Some online sources require a minimum of 25, which is a bit much for me.

Even in the Houston area, I cannot find a local source.

I guess it's time to repost these charts:

The above were current as to prices as of 19 Feb. Hazmat and shipping fees (origin to Michigan) are included except where noted.

The least expensive per pound is Jack's Powder Keg house brand at $10.20 in 25 lb lots. Next is Powder Inc's KIK at $10.75 in 25 lb lots. Those are also the least expensive in smaller size lots, although the price per pound is higher.

If you only want Goex, in 5 lb lots, here are the choices:

Any questions?

That's a better price than I've ever seen in a store. My last order from Powder Inc. came out to about $11 a lb. if I remember right. But I did buy 25 lbs. of it. I wish I had a Gander Mtn. nearby. When I do a gunshow in Austin (600 miles away) is the only time I get to visit it.

If I want to buy powder, I have to travel 104 miles(by my odometer)to the Cabela store in PA, one hour and 43 minutes drive time. Each way. A can of 3F cost me $19, tax included. Seems nobody in NJ carries it. :barf:

From Jersey why not cut about 15 miles off the trip each way and go to Dixon's Muzzleloading Shop in Kempton. I assume you come in to Pa on I-78 if so you pass the exit for his place. Well worth the time for a stop.
