The dove season open in south Texas last Friday. I went 8 for 14 shots with my 20 guage fowler, clyinder choke. My load is 1/38 oz # 8 shot and and equal amount of 3F Goex. I use a cardboard and a thin fiber wad.
On an even happier note, my grandson Patrick came with my son Saturday afternoon. It was 10 year old Patrick's first dove hunt. He shot an old H&R 410, 2 1/2 case that I loaded with 1/2 oz of # 9 shot. I loaded the shells so many years ago that my label for the box is too faded to read. I think I used 2400 powder. My father used this shotgun to take his first dove when he was 8 years old in 1920. Both my older brother and I and my son used this old shotgun to take our first doves.
Patrick is the fourth generation. We were hunting around a stock tank. He got 2 doves for 3 shots under my close supervision. He says he can't wait to take his new baby brother hunting. Five months old may be a little too young.I'm one very proud grandpa.
