My first attempt at leather/cloth work. A simple hunting pouch inspired by Webb’s Sketch book of Southern Appalachian Pouches and gear.

The bag is lined with heavy canvas, they leather was dyed with the old iron and vinegar mixture.

Thanks for looking! Comments/tips always welcomed

:haha: :hatsoff: comments, VERY NICE---- tips, yea I'll take any ya want to share :blah:

Fisher, take some steel wool and throw it in a mason jar filled with vinegar. another name for it is "vinegaroon" works great with natural tanned leathers and wood (the natural tannins are what is reacting) I have heard (emphasis!) that it won't work on crome tanned leathers though... I haven't tried it myself so I don't know if that is fact or not! another thing thats nice about it is that the vinegaroon won't discolor your hands when you work with it, unlike other leather dyes!

My only comment on the bag itself, would be that I'd like to see the flap cover the whole opening, if you look on either side you see the gap? I'd worry my kit getting wet in rainy weather, but as you said it is of Southern Appalachin desirn so its still right as is, and this is just my own personal thing!

That is pretty much all I did. The stuff sat for a week before I used it. The Veg tan leather stained instantly when I applied the liquid with a sponge. I have also been told that new steel does not work as well as old stuff. Something to do with alloys that can be found in new steel. I used some rusty nails and bolts that I collected 20 years ago and they were pretty old then.

I'm not over the moon about the flap either. I should redo it.
