How common was it for Southern Mountain Rifles to be built without a buttplate like this one?

I'm no expert, but I think it was fairly common.

Hence the term "Poor Boy" very little of anything that wasn't necessary to fire the rifle.

Poor boy with a Tennessee Bean box. What's the other half look like? No nose cap and no entry pipe?
Being fortunate enough to attend regularly both longrifle shows in Knoxville, TN as well as Wheeler State Park, AL, I can tell you that no butt plate on a southern rifle would not be unusual.
