Spring pole lathe

Dragged out a wood lathe i made years ago and converted it into a spring pole lathe.
Now i have to think of something to make on it. :hmm:

I believe you would be correct, was going to cut a pole but decided to try this first. Getting enough stroke is the key, had the board on the ground facing towards me the first time but it would wear ya out raising your leg that high.
This set-up works good, ya can pump it while sitting and it turns the work about five revolutions.

Nice setup. You could turn wooden bowls and plates on that if you make a mandrel and bring the poppets (head and tailstock) closer together.

I did make a container of sorts on it a long time ago. The face plate has two removable studs that serve as drive studs that i took out and put screws into the back of a piece of wood to mount so i could turn a bowl.
I`m not much of a wood worker, i just have to try everything once and make things. :grin:

Lenn, looks like a nice set-up. I always wanted to make one of those, but my workshop space is so cramped now I wouldn't have a place to put it. Used to watch the Old Yankee Workshop on Public TV, he used some neat old tools I liked. Still want to build a shaving horse someday. Emery

I seen a nice one on Roy Underhills woodwright shop, here`s the link to his site.
The one he had on his show had a adjustable pole on the bottom, very nice.
