Where I spent my summers in East Texas thats a fight'n situation.

  You got that one right!

I grew up in East Texas and I try to go back there every chance I get, especially during hunting season. I can vouch for your statement! Man, I miss those Piney Woods every day!

When I lived in Northern Calif. a bunch of us would have a winter camp and hunt squirrels and quail and have a big feed. I always cooked the heads and the other guys would never believe I really liked them, they thought I was just trying to freak them out. Didn't know what they were missing.

Deadeye,
squirrel heads!!!!!!!(yum-yum)
don't get no better than that!!!!
snake-eyes :hmm: :: :hmm: :: :youcrazy:

I love fried squirrel, but you guys can have all the heads and stomach fillings you want.

I like mine done up in a Brunswick Stew. Ain't had any lately, someone stole em off the porch :curse: :curse: :curse:last year when me and my partner were puttin his dogs away, boy I bet those people had a big surprise when they opened that bag!!! ::

I've eaten a lot of wild meat and have head much good and much bad experiences (depending on the cook, the hunter, the food the animal ate, etc). I've had everything from really yummy to really gamey. As to squirrels though, I've never really had a good one. Eaten them quite a few times and the only time I liked them was in a heavy stew. All but one of these experiences were with other people hunting them and cleaning them. There seems to be a lot of you that like it, so I wonder... Ist here a secret to cleaning them, hunting them, etc to keep them from being overwhelmingly gamey?

:results: (my results certainly did...) :p

Crossfire,

I've never actually eaten squirrel that I would consider to be "gamey" tasting. Maybe it has something to do with what they eat in certain areas, but I don't know if that would really make a huge difference.

Where I hunt, the squirrels live on acorns and that is about all. What do "your" squirrels eat?

When I camp during squirrel season, squirrel is my main source of protein and I don't cook them in any special way. I simply soak them in ice/salt water from my cooler for a while (maybe 3 hours), then I fry them as one would fry chicken - flour/salt/pepper. I usually take along a little bbq sauce too.

I grew up in West Virginia and ate quite a few squirrels out there and now I live in Arizona and I've eaten 2-3 out here. Just haven't had a good experience with them. Now Rabbit on the other hand. MMMMMMMM. Luv it, Luv it, Luv it.

try squirrelpfeffer. After collecting 3-4 of those treerats,
clean, bone and cut in to bitesize pieces.
Put in some thing you can close, I. E. Jar or crock .
Add 50-50 Water and vinagar enough to cover meat, add diced Onion lg., salt and pepper, clove, bay leave. Marinade for
a day or two.
Strain, brown in butter, add some of your marinade, let simmer until tender(about 30 Min.) add a cup of sour cream just before eating. serve with noodles homemade is best, spatzle is real good (german) to. not too hard to make in a camp if you are there and you done shot a bunch of those little tree devils. add a rabbit or two same mix good eats.

That is making my mouth water! Thanks for the recipe. I will have to try that this May during our spring squirrel season.
