Can anyone recommend a stain for curly ash? I'm looking for more of a brown than a red. Has anyone used aqua fortis on ash?

I don't recommend aqua fortis to anybody or for anything. There are just too many modern stains and finishes that do a better just more easily and safely. Not to mention more predictable results. Get a medium brown satin from the hardware store and try it.

Will you please define what you mean by "better" as it pertains to modern finishes over AF?

My main concern with modern finishes is how light fast they are when exposed to UV.

The statement on safety I understand as there is the acid to consider, however mild it is.

Solar-LUX dye based stains claim to be UV and fade resistant but one look at an MSDS on those will convinced me they are not as safe as AF.

Enjoy, J.D.

I recommend aqua fortis for every kind of stock wood, maple, cherry, walnut, ash, and whatever else you might try. Once you experiment on a piece of the stock wood you are using it is totally predictable, will not fade, and may even be enhanced by the judicious use of stain, if you keep in mind that the stain will fade over time so you must account for that.

just my opinion, but i've seen a stock done in curly ash it had no stain just the oil finish and it was beautiful.

magic maple looks good on curly ash.

I figured it must work good on something.

I tried it on a nice piece of #3 Curly Maple and it produced such a terrible color I had to resand the entire stock.

I seem to recall that over time, its ugly color (on maple) gets even worse after the gun ages.

I will never use Magic Maple to stain anything with ever again.

This was stained with Magic Maple stain over 18 years ago.
