Mrs. Claus just asked me what I wanted for Christmas and since I don't have the stain for the flinter I am building I told her I wanted a stain for my gun stock.
Thing is I don't know what kind to get.
I want it to be a dark color with the figure and curl to
to come out light in color and be pronounced.
Any suggestions on what to use for this project?

You just opened up a great big can of worms.

Do you want your stain based on...
water, alchohol or acid

Check out this thread and you'll see that there are levels to stain and types of stain and it goes on and on and on...

Stock staining methods and finished results

You be the judge of what you like and the skill level required for the results you desire.

Once you decide the stain you like, I suggest several weekends of experimentation. Depending on your results you may stick with your choice or switch to another.

It takes time. :m2c:

Having worked with wood, furniture and stocks, both, I need to state that a dye is preferable (sp?) to a stain for this sort of work. Stains tend to have larger particulates and when working with fine grained woods (IMHO) do not perform well.

Look for wood dyes or use some Birchwood Casey (gunstock finishing kits abound).

Also, see this THREAD.
