Just curious, but what is the yellow stuff on the stock in the carving ? Never seen that before.

Yellow food coloring. I use it to highlight the rough edges. Thank you for the compliment. Hopefully it will look good when finished.

Slowly I turn, step by step. Not for sure as to how many hours a master builder would have into what I have done, I have 61 hours so far. Still lots of clean up and detailing to do.

Started to give it the once over twice. And adding in some detail. Discovered the humidity has swelled the wood some, pushed the barrel forward (haven't slotted the under lugs yet) and the buttplate back. Can feel the wood stands proud of the buttplate. Patch box does not slide in all the way either. Have had this problem before. It will have to spend a few days in my climate controlled gun room before I do the final sanding.

Made a plate to go under the cheek piece that will have loops in to hold a vent pick. Wood is shrinking back so I can continue with the rest of the detail work.

I thought the stock was Cherry, but it’s premium Maple. Do you have a preference in wood for carving?

I would re-do the vent pick holder, get rid of the screws and use small brass pins, counter sink the holes in the plate and peen the ends of the pins and file the pins flat to the plate, another suggestion would be using thinner brass for the plate the screws to me look out of place.

My carving is limited. Have not carved on other woods so I could not say as to what my preference would be. Thank you for the comment.

Haven't posted progress in a while. With two coats of LMF stain and some engraving done.

No. I use a buzz box, or that's what I call it. I tried hand engraving and I don't have the dexterity because of arthritis. It is definitely not a professional job...
