I like your addition of the vent pick holder. It's a very good looking rifle and only betterso with your add ons. I'm thinking more and more that "my" Kibler will be a 58 colonial.

How wide is the butt plate?

Hi Norman,
I am so sorry. I got distracted by so much other work and forgot to respond to you. Your carving is very nice but I prefer less repetition of the same motifs, such as the lobed leaves or shell like lobes. The carving around the barrel tang does not flow really well. The middle lobes need to be longer giving the overall shape a bit more elongation around the end of the tang. The severely straight molding lines leading to the tang carving should undulate and flow better from the lock panel moldings.

I also think the beaver tails at the ends of the lock and side plate panels would look better if larger. I like the carving behind the cheek piece but I would prefer it to be more closely linked to the edges of the cheek piece. It is detached and too far away, and the large volute needs some details. Maybe interrupting ends of leaves, some interior accent lines, etc. It needs detail to draw deeper interest. Some incised accent lines more than what you have already would help.

Norman, these are my opinions based on my experience and learning, nothing more. Your carving is very nice. My intention is to just give you a little more food for thought and maybe a little inspiration. Your friend,

No problem, I can understand being busy when it comes to working on projects. I want to thank you for the information, that will certainly help on the next build... If I attempt another. I love your guns and the tutorials you do.

I recall seeing Mr. Kibler at the Gunmaker's Fair a few years back; he had a veritable STACK of boxed kits; you could simply read the end labels, and pick out the variety you wanted. All the specs were there, cal., wood, etc. Of course that would do no good if you had a specific spec in mind, but there was quite a variety and it wouldn't surprise me if he had a 'show discount' going, but I don't know that.

Your engraving really looks good, could you give us a demonstration on how that engraver works?
Not for sure on how to do a video to post here. If you do a search on the internet you may find what you're looking for. The learning curve takes quite awhile just to cut simple lines. It's a good thing I had a 5 gal bucket of 2" wide by .030 brass cut offs to practice on. Sharpening the graver points is my biggest problem. Also my engraving is still in the crude stages.

No. I use a buzz box, or that's what I call it. I tried hand engraving and I don't have the dexterity because of arthritis. It is definitely not a professional job...
Sorry, when I hear this description, I think of an old medical THEROPY box with a 1-1/2 volt dry-cell battery. What is a "buzz box"? Perhaps you can post a picture?

I like what I see and wish I could do something similar. I've only got plates and vent picks on my two SMR and don't see them being of much use but they sure look nice.

Getting back at it again. Going to have to acraglas the barrel channel. First time I have had a barrel channel open up, most of the time the barrel gets tighter.

Almost done. Have to figure out what I want to engrave on the buttplate.
