Looking to try my .20 gauge Fowler on Illinois birds this spring. What would be a good starting point for load developement? Current small game load is 60 grains FFF, a 1/2" felt wad followed by a 1/8" card wad 1 oz. #6 shot and a thin over shot card to hold it all in place. Makes a good squirrel, rabbit load.

For turkey, I would suggest upping your load. Bob Spencer's BP Notebook suggests 80g of fff and 1 & 5/8 oz #6 shot for a 20 bore. If your shots are close, a bit less than that might do. Each gun is a bit different & a good turkey load seems harder to develop/agree upon than most others. Patterning on a life size target at your likely range & using the "tin can penetration" test (both suggested on other threads) at that range are good ideas.
I am sure you will get more suggestions & then it is a matter of trying them in your gun.

I use the load in Aspen's article, substituting 2 Oxyoke 1/8" prelubed wool wads in place of a full 1/2" cushion wad...taken some Toms with it, works great.

80grn measure of Goex 3F (90grns Goex 2F)
2 Oxyoke 1/8" prelubed wool wads
120grn measure of hard #6s (1+5/8oz)
2 Circle Fly OS cards
