First off let me say, that I am by no means a rifle builder. But I do have a T/C Renegade that I would like to change to a 40 cal and put a full length stock on. Has any one took on this type of project, I know that I can buy a drop in barrel, I am just wondering about the stock? How much work is involved in this. Any thoughts comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If I understand what you are saying you want a new stock and new barrel. That leaves you with the original lock and buttplate, patchbox, triggers and guard and sights. With a fullstock, the original rib and pipes can't be used.

You may be better off scratch building a new gun and still having what you've got now. The Renegade is waaaay shorter than most fullstock guns- what is it, 28" or 30" on the barrel? One of the advantages of a longer barrel is the longer sighting radius. I'd not build a fullstock with a barrel shorter than 36" unless it was to copy an original model tradegun that was made that way.

Just a different approach to consider. Generally when someone wants a fullstock, it's because a fella wants the longer lines and earlier appearance of a fullstock, and the Renegade parts and barrel will not give you either of those qualities.

Thanks rich pierce for the info. What i am looking to do is make my rifle a little bit differant.Alot of people have the renegade.Thought thet I would try and have something a little unique. Any thoughts on this. One of these days when my kids are raised i am gouing to have a custom rifle built.thanks again.

Pecatonica River offers stocks for your Renagade.

My price list is a little out of date, but when it was current, the wood for a full stock could be bought for $90 for plain Maple. You would have to add the fees for stock shaping but that was only about $50 making the pre cut stocks price about $140.
This is not exactly a drop in stock. Some inletting needs to be done and the butt is left long so you can make the pull length whatever suits you.
The stock also has more drop than a standard TC stock so IMO, it comes to the eye faster.

If you decide to talk to them, they also carry drop in barrels so they could provide you with a 32 or 38 inch long .40 caliber one in the same shipping container. If you want the long barrel, call them at (815) 968-1995 and ask them if the stock your thinking of will work with the long barrel.
Dick Greensides (the owner) is a great guy to work with and will not try to sell you anything that you don't want, or that won't work.

:)

Just some quick math the stock at $120 and the barrel at $170= $290 w/o some extra parts you'll need. let's say $350 with the shipping, small parts and supplies and tools to fit and finish. You might be able to purchase something else in .40 cal for around that complete. I've built rifles for less than that in parts but have the experience to be able to build from blanks, etc. I like the idea of a .40 caliber a lot. I have a .45 and it's big for squirrel and OK for deer to 70 yards or so. Good for woodchucks! Want to get a smaller caliber rifle soon.

Thanks for the info guys, I think that I will just restock it for now.And work on a 40 cal barrel after the first of the year.

If I were in your situation, (and I have been) I would look for an inexpensive longrifle kit. One example:

This would give you a complete gun kit in your chosen caliber for about $100 more.

A Renegade is not a good platform for upgrade and a .40 cal barrel on it will be quite heavy. Might be okay for the bench, but rough to handle off hand.
