well, I have put together 5 guns from precarved kits from pecatonica, track, tip curtis, north star west, I want to try and build one from a blank, all the guns have been winter projects. I figure working from a blank will take a lot longer, am in absolutely no hurry on this one. I have the art of building the penns. longrifle book and just got the gunsmith of grennville county book. where is the best place to buy a blank? Dunlap woodcraft? Tigerhunt? flinch

Flinch,
What type of wood/quality are you looking for? Half/fullstock?

Details man... we need details

fullstock, don't want to go with too expensive wood, as it may end up being firewood. thinking of making a pattern of a lancaster style I put together, only adding a bit more drop to the stock and 1/4" castoff. flinch

Flinch,
I don't think you will go wrong with either company. Especially if you are not wanting a top grade wood. Go with the best price but if both were equal price then Dunlap would be my suggestion. I can't even say why? Maybe just because Wayne is a nice guy.

I've had good luck with Dunlap. Got what i had asked for at a good price.

I think you are going to be delightfully surprised starting from a blank. For one thing you have square sides, which makes drilling pins, and aligning stuff easier. You can get any length of pull and castoff you want. Just make fullsize drawings of the rifle/fowler and yer good to go. I'd go with Dunlaps, or Pecatonica (yes **** will sell you a blank. Go for it. Bill

I've gotten beautiful wood from Dunlap's, but it has always been very soft, yes, even the sugar maple. I'd call either Tigerhunt or Freddie Harrison. Freddie is a good 'ol boy that knows wood. Tell him what you want, and you will get it. Read that the same for Tigerhunt, except he's a city fella.

I have bought probably ? 25 stocks/blanks from Dunlaps & have never been disappointed with them. I usually hand pick them but when I tell him to send me some, I always tell him I want dense maple & he has always done me right. I usually get at least 3 at a time as he can wrap them together & ship them cheaper when 3 as you are paying the oversize weight anyway so may as well get your moneysworth.

I suggest you get at least a grade 5 or better, since you have built several you will be able to handle it....

Good Evening Flinch.

My vote goes to Dunlaps.

Because I was so picky, i took a year for Dunlaps to find a Walnut blank to suit me.

In the end, they finally cut a blank matching my specs, and I am happy.

Best regards and good shooting,

John L. Hinnant

If you are not an NRA or NMLRA Member, why not? I am carrying your load.

Flinch,
I'd go with Dunlap if you're looking for something in the middle as far as curl and price.

Dunlap usually has good hard, sugar maple, though not nearly as much as he has red maple, which I avoid like the plague... (that being said, I am currently working on a gun with a VERY UNUSUALLY hard piece of red maple...Much red maple, and perhaps most, is soft as butter.)

His walnut selection, frankly, always sucks. He can have some really good cherry, but it requires picking it out in person...

I've never been real impressed with the English walnut he has at Friendship. VERY coarse grain, and not really any harder feeling than GOOD quality American walnut. What I would love to have is some German walnut. Super nice to work, hard, fine grain, though normally quite plain. Now, if I could find some of that without having to amputate any limbs...

So far, I have found that American walnut from Pennsylvania is usually the best. From other regions, it can be hit or miss...sometimes more miss than hit!

I have gotten four blanks from Dunlop and have not been disappointed yet. All have been dence and hard. All have met or exceeded my expectations as well.

I am working another stock from another dealer right now that is way softer than anything I ever got from Wayne.

Over the years I've bought wood from Dunlaps,Tigerhunt and Freddie Harrison. My vote goes to Freddie.Tiger hunt still has some nice wood from time to time.I have not been impressed with what I've seen of Dunlaps.I can only go on what he brings to Dixons maybee thats not his best. The wood that Freddie has is Hard!!!!He can supply many grades of curl.He also can supply Quater sawn stump which I prefer for dementional stability.
