I just bought a muzzleloading SxS (not in hand yet) and it had a large Diamond carved into the left side of buttstock. I would like to fill this with something other than metal and refinish the stocks. Any suggestions of a type of easily applied filler in a dark color? Something that could be sanded smooth and would take oil well? Really don't want to fiddle with wood as my knuckles hate fine work these days.

The diamond is an elongated one, maybe 2" long. I am thinking maybe 1/8" deep. The grooves are maybe a bit over 1/4" wide. I kind of like it, so the reason for the query. That much sanding would likely require reconfiguring whole stock AND the steel buttplate.

I ordered an 2-1/8" x 1-1/4" x 1/16" inlay from DGW to inlet into a cheekpiece.

If you don't want to fill it with wood or metal, I think you should get use to it being there.

Just my opinion but any filler like epoxy would end up looking bad. No offense meant but it would look like someone who didn't know what he was doing filled some carving on the stock with something that doesn't belong there.
