My friend Nic had a Caywood wilson flintlock stolen off his car at the southern Vermont primitive biathlon Saturday. It's 20 years old, lots of patina a .58 cal. It has a flash hole liner as opposed to the original cone shaped flash holes Caywood's have.
This is not posted to soil the event, because it's a great event. It's posted to remind folks the world has changed. I have been doing biathlons for 17 years and never heard of anything like this happen at an event. We hope to find it but if we don't perhaps our awareness will have been raised
Thanks
Nit Wit

Losing a rifle is a stake in the heart to anyone in this sport! I've done many biathlons and major shoots thru the years and never heard of this happening, sorry about this. I am glad that you have taken the step to not blame Brew and the guys at So. Vt. Nit Wit , I've known you for years and it's nice to see your positive attitude to Muzzleloading sports. :hatsoff:

This is truly unfortunate, but at public events it's been known to happen...and seldom by the event participants. With 'patina' in the description, I can see someone thinking they were making off with a valuable antique. Happened once to me and the only satisfaction I ever got was knowing the thief got his heart broken when he tried to sell it and found it was a 'patinated' Italian copy! :shocked2:

Unfortunately gun theft is a problem at any gathering. You have to be vigilant with your stuff. Some thief's go to events just to rip off guns & gear. I've seen it on the modern ATA trap shoot events - the bigger the event to more big buck gun thefts :shake: .

This sucks heinously.
For as much as we hate to admit it, Nit wit summed it up perfectly:
"...to remind folks the world has changed."
Thank You.
I've competed all over the Eastern half of the United States in a wide variety of shooting sports. Spent a lot of years shooting ATA Trap and thought nothing of leaving my engraved Perazzi Trap gun on the rack outside the clubhouse while I went inside to get some lunch.
Sadly...there's NO WAY I'm doing anything like that these days. :shake:

I've seen a bunch of BP guns stolen since the 1970's from events. From the information gathered when some were recovered, they were all taken by tourists, not by participants at the events. Some were tourists who wanted a cool wall hanger. A lot were miscreants who thought they could be resold to an "antique dealer" or at an auction. A few were taken by juveniles who wanted a "gun", probably to be used in other crimes.

:shake:

In many cases, we have been lulled into a false sense of security. I have been lucky as have many others to have ended up in a semi safe ebb amongst a river of danger. So, count your blessings and be ever vigilant.
