Storage in Southern States

My wife and I are making the move south to SC. Up here in NY I really don't have to deal with too much humidity and since my BP rifles don't fit into my gun safe, I store them next to it in my "sports closet" as my wife calls it.
My question, is storage harder down there with a much longer humid period? How do you folks do it? Any input on this would be GREATLY appreciated. Joe
I should imagine South Carolina is near as bad as Florida. I would die of brain failure without air conditioning. All my iron stuff in the house has no problem with rust because we have nice air inside.

My machine shop shed is open to snakes and bugs year round. The metal can sweat and get rusty but the lightest cost of oil of any kind keeps them rust free. Fluid Film is my favorite for gun protection. Learned that from living in Maine where the constant cold, damp, salt laiden air will rust a gun overnight not to mention degrade your brain to repeating ayuh at every opportunity.

Don't have an answer to your question about humidity and storage, but where are you moving? My wife and I have been looking for a seasonal retirement home in "upstate", probably Oconee or Pickens Counties. The real estate market is super hot there right now and we may cool our jets and wait a bit to see if the bubble doesn't burst soon before pulling the trigger on a place though. (I see that the original post was made more than a year ago, didn't realize it was such an old thread, but I'm still curious where you settled and how you're liking it).

Welcome to The South! Hang your guns on the wall and make sure your AC filter is changed out. That will sort the humidity down here. Born and bred in Savannah, Georgia(The Original House of Humidity). Current resident of Roanoke, Alabama. I have 5 smokepoles on the wall and no fear of rust provided I keep the central air on. Forget the politics and just breath in a deep cloud of free pollen! If ye live near the marsh, maybe put some neutral grease or oil on those guns rather than the traditional animal fats like bear grease.

We’ll, it was put off, I want to blame Covid, both wife and I had it, her last Christmas, me this Christmas, (our new Christmas tradition, lmao),,, anyway, the time is here. In 2 weeks we head south for a week to obtain a rental for a year. Then, if all is liked, we take out time and look for a place to make our own. We are looking in the Conway or north Sc area, just enough, I think, to be out of the tourist sections and still enjoy the coast.

I live in the piedmont of Georgia and I’m sure SC is the same. The piedmont area I’m in is below the snow line and above the gnat line. Love the mountains and the low country but would rather be in between them both.

One thing I will miss about NY State, and THE ONLY THING, is the Adirondacks. I live just south of them and always venture there any time I can, so I understand about the love of the mountains.

Believe I’d rather deal with the year round gnats than the tourist and snow in the mountains. No offense but the gnats keeps the liberal urban people away. Use to be we would just say Yankees but the liberal nut crowds. . have become worst than any amount of gnats and yellow flies.

Please keep them!

Anyway, getting out of NY and heading down to that southern hospitality.. Just hope I can find like minded flintlockers down there in the Carolinas. Belonged to a great club up here “Old Saratoga Muzzleloaders” and would like to find a club or group, or range , muzzleloader friendly, in SC.

Well congrats on getting out of NY. I live next door in Vermont, and I only stay here because I have two grandsons who need hunting and fishing lessons. They are aged 10 and 6 and live on a farm in Southern Vermont. They are already asking lots of questions about guns and hunting and fishing. That should keep me busy here for a few years.
I have shot at the “Old Saratoga Club” and there are a bunch of great guys who shoot there. You may find a good Club in Raleigh,NC area.
Good luck, BP

I am just west of Charleston, SC. I don't know where your headed, but around here we have a club and needing shooters.

I am with the Charlestown Longrifles Black Powder club

Shoot me a PM for details

Wondered how many nice pieces were ruined in the awful flooding down there in recent years, in addition to the cars, trucks, etc. Not good to see people losing all their possessions.

Moving into the USSA free zone, you can probably stow all your handguns in the trunk and drive away. Please understand I am not a lawyer and am not mentally competent and am therefore not responsible for whatever awkward situations my babbling idiocy gets you into!
Each and every day in America, someone dies and leaves behind guns, among other things. Unless an item is a Class III-type thing, mostly the guns go to relatives without any further notice. If a fellow has a Will, maybe things will be sold or auctioned, but I've seen many items be just dispersed among survivors with no by-your-leave. I see many older collections showing up at auctions as men retire or die off; the type of high quality guns you don't often see show up at that time.

Well, “a” move is still planned but, after being in the Myrtle Beach area and going to our appointments with realtor and Apartment complex folks earlier this week, we had a lot of discussion’s on the area and SC in general. Its not going to be our “retirement area”. Now, my wife is the planner here and we have a son in Austin TX area and now the discussion starts all again. Now, Austin is really not my cup of tea but, a bit south is San Marcos and San Antonio which may draw my interest. But going from the frozen north to the heat of Texas concerns me. Although I hear San Antonio has a great muzzleloader club, and leaving mine up here, may be a good factor. Oh well. I’m ready to leave NYS.

Told my wife I wasn’t crazy about Austin, that’s where my son lives but, his area was not for me. Plus, don’t want to crowd him, I figure and hr south or west..
