straight razor shaving

I had never heard of Double Duck razors before reading through this thread. I went and checked out ebay.....the few that are available have multiple bids and they aint cheap..
I use a hollow ground 7/8 Wade and Butcher. I have tried my hand at forging a few from some 15n20 steel. This small one is my favorite. The other is the W&B

Another good brand is J.A. Henckels -- I like those ..
there are so very many great brands out there
any thing made in England, Germany, Sweden, Spain, or newer ones from Japan are good ...

I really love Straight Razors. I have a good collection of about 60 very good Razors. I also have sharpening stones and several strops. I have shaved with a Straight Razor since 1973. Every day. I have not used any other method since then. I use Williams Shaving Soap and a 1950's Old Spice Mug my father gave me. I do use new Badger brushes instead of antique brushes. I prefer the Silver Tip version and use the Edwin Jagger Silver Tip Brushes.

I have a couple Razors Double duck and others,I have a shaving mirror and stand and brush ,the brush handle is Ivory,split cause it was not kept lubricated,with water.Don't use them,not sure where I get them from.When I was stationed in Japan the barber, where I got my hair razor cut,held a modern double Edge razor blade between his fingers and shaved his beard..

Old fellow is gone for 12 years now, but I knew him well, as when he wasn't to cantankerous was a world of knowledge and laughs. He shaved with a knife he had forged in his shop and used a pig bristled brush with store bought soap, can't say if it was Williams. Don't know if he was pulling my leg, but he told he was shaving with a Gillette safety razor and it cut him and that's when he decided to do something different.
$175 bucks for a straight razor, how about just not shaving.

I am really surprised at how many posts there are on this topic. I wonder what % of the responders are re-Enactors (the spelling interrupter went crazy with my last word making suggestions that weren’t even close. Still not sure it’s spelled right). Can the forum “ spell helper” be turned off?

I've been using straights for years, learn to use both hands, it makes it a lot easier. The real art is in keeping them sharp. Dry it off with a towel and put it back in its coffin so it does'nt rust. I actually strop before each shave, and best after 3 days growth and after a shower. You will save a fortune in razor blades.

I've known a few guys who started using straight razors for just that reason.

I've picked up bargain double edged razors off and on for the last 10 years. I ordered blades online that were reasonable, but over the last few years I buy new blades at garage sales and thrift stores when they are real cheap. I probably have enough right now for 20 years. I still would like to try a straight and have bought a few. I have the stones to sharpen them including one that belonged to my grandpa for his straight. Now, to just get one sharp enough and the courage to try it before I develop the shakes in my old age.

I was told by a Barber ,they taught how to shave in Barber School by practicing on a ballon,Put the shaving cream on it and then "shave" it off.
I have a couple of razors ,just never had the desire to try them out,,

Not if it's sharp enough.

I've known several custom knife makers. The hair on their arms was never even. They'd have bald patches that migrated up, from testing blades.

This soap/cream right here is some great cushion,glide, and smell...a top tier for sure...and makes a lot of suds and leaves my Hollywood face feeling great. West Coast Shaving carries it now.
